suggestions for lodging

Looking for suggestions on lodging for Sturgis, Haven't been there yet and i'm heading out there in 2004 with my dad, going to surprise him for his 65th birthday.

I"m looking for recommendations for places to stay, not necessarily in Sturgis, but not in a tent either (the old man is ornary enough).

Thanks

Look on the sturgis.com site, there are a few housing agents you can get house for the week. Here are some: Just got this one for $400 a night! 6 bed rooms, sleeps 12 about 35 miles south of Sturgis. Good luck...

The Black Hills State University in spearfish rents dorm rooms. Not too bad if you are just looking for a place to sleep. 2 beds for 9 nites at $450. For another $45 you get pillows, sheets blankets and towels.

How hard is it to find a decent motel room in Rapid City? What's the going rate for rooms during the event? How far is Rapid City from Sturgis?
I want to attend the event in '04 and would appreciate any input.

If you are looking to get a motel, start calling now or at least right after the first of the year. I think most places are booked a year in advance. Rates will be outrageous. I camp so I'm justing going by what I have heard.

We stayed in Rapid City at the Quality Inn booked first of the month of July this year for 2003 Sturgis Ralley and the new motel in White wood the Iron horse Inn so it verys as to when or how you look for rooms to stay

Where do you usually camp?

I camp away from the crowds in Hill City at Mt Rushmore KOA. The most popular campground in Sturgis is probably Glencoe or the Buffalo Chip. There are some other ones as well.

depending on what kind of camp ground you are looking for, glencoe and buffalo chip are the two party places. they are east of town about 2 miles and lots of action out there. i have never stayed there, but i am only guessing that sleep is a couple hours and then things get revved up again. buffalo chip of course has live music, and also out that way you are with in crawling distance (so to speak) of the full throttle saloon where they have live big named music. i like to suggest the camp ground right along the interstate (i-90) about 4 miles from town called elkview camp ground. www.elkviewcampground.com

its still a newer campground (about 5 years maybe) and they are clean and affordable. so depending on what your looking for, partying, or maybe getting some sleep for a few hours, should play a part in where you stay

Last year we stayed at Hog Heaven in Sturgis. That's where you'll find me next year too!

It's a stones through from the freeway and Main Street. It was relatively quiet (you could actually sleep at night!) there was plenty of room for tents, and the hot showers were not half bad!

I plan on making the trip next year as well. I started looking for a place to stay yesterday and it looks like many are already booked. I am looking for a campgroung with cabins available. My wife doesn't want to stay in a tent for four nights, and after 1800 miles to get there I don't blame her. It looks like everything in Sturgis is booked. I wouldn't mind staying somewhere centrally located if someone could make a suggestion. I will want to ride through the Badlands and see Mt. Rushmore. I am not familiar with the location of these ddifferent places, so I am looking for some help from someone local or past experiences.
Thanks, Brian

Dean stayed in one of the cabins at Mt Rushmore KOA this year. Maybe he will reply. I think he was happy and I think he booked another one for next year. Cabins do go quickly though. Good luck in your search. Here is their website: http://www.palmergulch.com/redirect....e/sd/41125.htm

Oh, if you don't mind roughing it a little bit, check into the kamping kabins as well. It's a little cabin with bunk beds....one is a double and electricity. No water or bathroom. You use the same bathrooms and showers that the tenters do.

Ginger, does elkview have cabins? I've got a better chance of seeing Elvis as sturgis than getting my father to sleep in a tent!!

i don't beleive they do gator. to the best of my knowledge, they just have motor home hook up and tent space. i know of another campground close to town that has some cabins, but i am guessing they are probley booked in advance. and thats at lamphere. which is right next door to glencoe
