What Campgroud or towns got Hail Fri?

I was wondering how everyone faired on Friday with the reported hail. We left town Fri morning, so it was a non-issue for us.

Wondering what campgrounds or towns got the bad hail?

I would assume any hail hurts, and can be dangerous.

We left Saturday morn.

We skated from any damage down in Custer, but word is that well over 2,000 campers had the windows broke out at the chip and some bikes were towed. True or not, can't say but that is what the locals had told us. I 90 was closed for a while the wind & hail was so bad.

All the rain I had seen was when we were safe at the hotel, 60 miles from Sturgis.
Matter of fact, the rain gear never left the saddlebag from Indiana and back.
Call me lucky.

sturgis got ping ball sized to baseball sized hail, but from what i am hearing it was mostly all out east of town at the camp grounds that got the worst of it. here in sturgis, at one point it looked like a monsoon, the way the wind was blowing side ways, and the hail coming down

We were camped at No Name three miles south of town. After a day of riding in the south hills we had stopped in Rapid for a meal before going back and just before we left town I asked if we could stop at a bookstore before leaving.

Darlin' Companion reluctantly agreed and the delay turned out to be a possible life-saver for us. We came in right behind the storm. The freeway was backed up and there were damaged cars and bikes all along the road.

We didn't see any people down. And how that happened has to be just short of a miracle. My husband said he thought the winds that accompanied the hail may have been seventy-miles an hour.

Yes, Ginger. I'll second it on the sideways wind. Some of our dents are on the side of the truck.

Riding towards the storm was pretty chilling. Don't think I've ever seen darker clouds with the one over Sturgis that spooky kind of white that signals hail.

We returned to the campground to many tents and tree branches down. People were walking around in a daze and the damage to people's cars, bikes and campers was throughout the grounds.

The fiberglass topper on our pickup had been broken through in two places and our windshield was broken. I picked up a couple of chunks of hail that must have been four inches across.

Husband is a sad man tonight. The pickup was a collector's item and in excellent shape. He thinks the insurance company will want to total it.

Nonetheless I feel very lucky.

We just got home so I'm trying still to find out if any people were harmed. There were five or six emergency vehicles on the road after we got back.

we have had the strangest of weather around here this year. we had all those blizzards starting last novemeber, and this summer has not been so terribly hot.

this hail storm tho, MAN ! i was listening to the scanner, and they were saying that sturgis, down town was to be hit by 530PM. it was almost on the dot when it did, and the it just poured rain, then the hail started. golf ball to ping pong sized hail, and it came down hard.

my wonderful new car has some damage i will be calling in monday. and that sucks

We were riding back from Keystone and I noticed the sky to the west was nasty so I flipped on the weather band and the first thing I hear is "baseball size hail in Meade county" we ripped it back to our Hotel in BlackHawk and avoided the weather completely, saw many vehicles yesterday on the way home with severe hail damage, windshields which were so bad I can't beleive the driver could see through them and the sheet metal pounded all to hell. Rode into Sturgis a bit later and you would never have known such a bad storm hit, streets were packed anyway.

It's a miracle, no one was killed.

Thankfully I was heading down towards hill city when all hell broke loose. I did notice the dark skies when we left Sturgis.

We rode to Rushmore Friday. We got back to Hog Heaven before the storm. This one came from the same direction and at about the same time as all the other storms that week, so we figured it was just another thunderstorm. We secured the camp and got in the tent to ride it out like the other ones. It started raining and then the tornado siren went off. I grabbed a jacket and my hat and Dr.Linda grabbed something to cover her head and we ran to a storage building overhang as it started to hail. At Hog Heaven, it was marble to golf ball size. There was an old bar on a deck, not used for the last 3-4 years, at the storage building. The deck was built on top of telephone poles sunk into the ground. I told Dr.L that if she heard anything sounding like a freight train to dive under there. She said "Where will you be?" and I said "Right behind you."

We really, really lucked out. We had no damage to the bikes. The back wall of the tent colapsed and we had about 5+ gallons of water in the tent, but that was it. The sleeping bag was damp to wet. We broke out a space blanket that I've been carrying around for over 25 years and that thing worked great, if a bit noisy.

We saw several bikes with damage on the way home. They looked like someone took a baseball bat to them. Amazing.

We were at the Silverado in Deadwood when the storm hit. Pea to quarter size hail with heavy rain. Mud and gravel all over the roads but nothing like what hit Sturgis.
