Aug 3-9 2009

There is something magical about the words

69th Annual Sturgis Rally -(2009) Just can't seem to put my finger on why?

Event Aug 3-9 2009. Probably leaving around the 1st, and back around the 11th?

Performance Harley-Davidson
807 N Geddes St
Syracuse, NY 13204
(315) 471-1157
43° 3'22.88"N 76°10'13.45"W

to

Sturgis Harley-Davidson
1040 Junction Ave
Sturgis, SD 57785
44°24'50.21"N 103°30'32.52"W

USA short route 1600 mi. each way (through Cleveland/Chicago)

Canada short route about 1600 mi. each way (through Toronto/Sarnia/Chicago)

USA long route: I don't really see a reasonable route that lets me avoid Chicago, and I really do not want to go through Chicago.

Canada Long Route: 1900 miles each way through Saulte St. Marie/ Minneapolis:

At this point, I'm favoring the long Canda route at least heading there, but there is plenty of time to think about it further, and comments are greatly appreciated.

Have you talked to Steve (Mustang)? He's done this a few times now.

Yes I talked to him yesterday Deb, and he took the SS Marie route home the last time. He's going to get me the route. I like the idea of it putting me through Minneapolis because I can visit my brother there too. It doesn't snow too much in August there does it?

We have plenty of time to discuss this but avoiding the Chicago area is always a good thing....unless you're going thru on 80 early on a Sunday morning.

Thanks Steve. I am hoping to be healthy enough to make the trip, but at this point it's still just a hope.

Something to consider as an alternate route.

There is a high speed ferry that goes from Muskegon Michigan to Milwaukee, WI. Cost is about $50 for the bike and $70 per person. The trip takes approx 2 1/2 hours.

Its an alternative to riding through Chicago.

When you depart in Milwaukee, you'll be just a couple blocks from Interstate 794, which leads to I-94 taking you through Milwaukee westward to Madison, where you'll hit I-90.

http://www.lake-express.com/default.aspx is the website for the ferry.

As the 08 rally comes to an end, I'll be looking for some recommendations from the 08 rally attendees. If you come across something that you found particularly bad or good please let me know.

Things being what things are...I've decided to do Rolling Thunder this year instead. Maybe next year.

Been a long time since I've heard from Steve. Dean and I had a beer or two with him in Sturgis.

Sorry Deb, I was looking forward to it, but I just couldn't make it happen this year. The 69th! annual too! Well, maybe the 70th.

Speaking of being 70, nice ride Steve. You going to Sturgis this year? By way of Argentina this time?
