It's closer to the upper number. We did Deadwwod to Mankato, MN last year in 13 hours, not pushing it too hard. Chicago is another 6 or 7 hours from here on I-90.

If riding, 19 or so unless you are in iron butt mode.
If I trailer, 13 is doable with a couple of drivers.
These days, with the wife and all the crap we want to bring including 2 bikes, just easier and faster to trailer.

Riding 900 miles in one day is doable. But you're going to be whipped when you arrive. Very whipped. And probably over tired & miserable.
I also live 900 miles from Sturgis. Usually ride 2 up. I have no desire whatsoever to stay in the saddle for 900 miles in a day. I always figured the highways are dangerous enough that one shouldn't push it by riding when you're cranky & tired. Everyone should know their limits and not exceed them.
Its always a 2 day trip there and 2 day trip back for me. Usually, I ride upwards of 500 miles the first day, so the second days ride is easier.
Undoubtedly, this is the reason why so many bikes make it to Sturgis via trailer. TIME. Riding in a SUV/Pickup/Etc with stereo blasting in air conditioned comfort means one can go 200 miles between stops in relative comfort.

The 13 hours that you are hearing is all out ride it like you stole it riding. Take in to account the weather conditions ( I've never Rode to Sturgis and not gotten rained on). stops to gas up and whatever else, and you are looking at a day to get to Soiuxs Falls, and another 3 to 4 hours the next day to Sturgis from Chicago. It takes me 2 1/2 days to go from NE Pennsylvania to Deadwood. First day gets me to Portage IN. Second day gets me to Soiux Falls, and then a few hours to Deadwood. Thats all out riding by myself with no one to hold me back. Don't get me wrong you can make it in 1 day but, when you get there you are going to be wasted. Plus once you get into the Badlands you are going to have the urge to start exploring, and by that time you're either wiped or trying to do it around dark.

13-14 hours from Milwaukee. I did it straight through twice. Not that I would recommend that. You gain hour of daylight heading west, but lose it coming back
Thats 94 to 90. Add 2-3 hours depending where in Chicago you are. Once you get past Dells, the interstate is nice.

Yes there are reason why people take trailers, but I will be nice.
If I got to trailer, I will go somewhere else. Wait until I have enough time and stamina to ride.
A person should be able to 1000 miles on interstate no problem what so ever. With decent bike, and with a windsheild.
Got to remember riding out there is differant wide open and flying.

Chicago to Sturgis=938 miles. Maintaining a 65mph average with stops will put you there in about 14-14.5 hours. 70mph average about 13.5 hrs. All doable but stops would be very limited to maintain that average. Have fun.

We did Souix Falls to Lake Geneva in one day back in 2003 for the 100th. Wasn't bad at all. If your doing 65 - 70 on the slab your just loafin.

I'm talking overall average as in stopping for gas, food, bathroom breaks etc. Big difference versus just hauling ass down the interstate.

Gas--food--bathroom===one stop. Gas up and ride till you need gas again. Get everything done and ride again.

Mankato MN to Sturgis is 10 hours riding 70+mph with stops for gas, rehydrate, stretch, and gas. Been there done that numerous times and it has always been the 10 hour average. Mankato is a little north of I-90 so you could shave a little time off. Never done Mankato to Chicago on the bike but in the car it is about 8 hours so I would figure 10 on a bike with stops. Good Luck!
