Fender Mod and 180 Rear tire for 02 FXSTBI

What type of fender mods would I have to do to run a 180 rear tire on my 2002 Night Train? My bike is already lowered so the tire is sucked up under the fender pretty good (stock 130 series). I would like to just modify the original fender, (the new 2006 fenders for the Night Trains look like crap!!) Also does anyone know what the minimum width wheel you need to run for the 180 tire. I am also looking for a stock 16in. 40 spoke rear wheel to replace the nasty looking solid disc on my bike.

I just investigated this topic for my 2004 FXSTI:

Apparently you can go to a 180 tire without any major mods to your bike other than:

Widen the rear guard by 1.25"/1.50" - (Put a 1.5" strip down the middle)

Straighten out the fender rails 1/2" or buy after market fender rails,

Buy/get made the correct size axle spacers to get the 180 tire/rim/pulley to line up with the trans pulley.

All the best, Ozzie

I did a 180 conversion for my 04' I used a 18x5.5 Revtech rim in combination with an Avon 180/55-18. I used the stock swingarm and brake caliper assembly. I took a standard sized(pulley side) axle spacer and put it in a lathe and turned it down .375" to fit the new larger hub(which is .250" shorter on caliper side to center wheel properly in frame, while the rotor side is .625" wider), then I used a new narrow belt sprocket pulley and belt from the 06' model HD's. I also picked up a new 06' belt guard and deflector. They bolt up perfectly in place of stock belt guard and deflector. I then cut off(sanded, smoothed and repainted) the stock fender horns and replaced then with aftermarket units and installed an 8.5" wide fender. The project came out perfect. Rear assembly has a classy looking custom look while keeping the "factory" feel and function, a very nice integration.

I spent about $1000 for the new rear fender, struts, pulley, belt, and belt guard, and about $1000 for the new wheel and rubber. So $2000 in total for my 180 conversion. A 200 will also fit the setup but the width then starts to border on looking absurd for the bike IMO. A 180 looks tight and is just right for the bike. Very balanced looking, and the handling is still great.

Like to see pics if you have some. Thanks. Sounds like you did a nice job.
