Metzler ME880 140/90-16 Dimension ?

Could someone out there that is running a Metzler ME880 140/90 -16 Rear Tire on there FL style bike ( mine is a 2000 Road King) possibly measure the width at the widest point of the mounted tire for me. My stock Dunlop 402 is very close to the belt and I want to make sure a Metzler won't hit. I am running ' Fat Spoke Rims' and I think the rim dimensions are a little different then stock. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide, Rusto..............

Check out: http://www.steelthundercc.com/tiresizes.html

After Tire Chart, there's a note: A rough rule of thumb: Each additional 1/2-inch of rim width will be approximately 1/4-inch more in each tire width. Good luck. jopez

A 140/90-16 is about 5.5". I've put A lot of these ME880,s as an upgrade to the stock 130/90-16,s and have had on problems.

Had one on my 01 RG and loved it, went back to the 130 when I replaced it and really don't like it, will be going back pretty soon, it was a pretty close fit on my stock HD laced wheels. FYI, the 130 has a higher load rating than the 140!

All you need to do is divide the mm of the new tire by 25.4 to get inches. Divide that number by 2 and that will tell you how much more width you will have on each side of your tire you are currently running. Unless you have a alot fancier tools than I do, what works best for me is to jack the rear up so you can lay under the bike. Then take a pair of needle nose pliers so you can reach up in there, and a piece of welding rod, and keep snipping the welding rod off until it just fits between the tire and the shock bolt which will in most cases be your narrowist point. After you have cut the welding rod to the correct length, then you can measure the rod to see how much more width you can stand. This will also allow you to know how much to machine the caliper bracket if your particular bike has the wheel off-centered to the left side.

I failed to mention that at the same time, if you want to keep your belt clearance that you currently have, you can also put a spacer between the pully and wheel if you end up centering the tire in the fender.
