Tire Thread

Where's the best place to buy tires?

My new to me '01 Heritage Springer needs new tires. Bike has just over 13K miles on it and the tires are about shot. Prolly the originals.

Did some research and Avons seem to be nice'n sticky. I'm happy to give up a little mileage for traction.

Sooooo.... where you guys buying yer tires from??

Thanks

I always liked Dennis Kirk because the date codes on their tires always seem to be newer

DK has tire sales too. My rear Dunlop www HD tire was $110. Still a deal at regular price and you don't have to join a gold club like JP.

What's the difference between the Dunlap Elite 3s and the Elite (no 3)??

And just an FYI... I was told the Elite 3s have been replaced by the Elite 4. Apparently the 4 is the new and improved version.

And I was also told the Metzeler 880 is no longer being produced, so it's 888 or???

I still think the Commander II's are a good balance.

If you go with Michelin; don't run sticker PSI. Run sidewall PSI. Or somewhere in the upper range.

I had been on the interweb and phone this afternoon with suppliers for about two fark'n hours. Seems the 1st choices of tires I wanted to go with were either discontinued or no WWWs, or nothing to fit my bike. Tires are for my new to me Heritage Springer so I absolutely HAD to go with WWWs Near the end of my search I talked to a tech guy at J&P. Tech guy told me the Dunlap Elites were pretty popular and allot of Elite 3 guys had switched to them after wearing their 3s out, and the majority were happy with them. So I figured fk it and went with the Elites (not the E 3s). Should be here in 4-5 days according to J&P.... we shall see about that as I've had ordering issues with them before. At least time is on my side, not exactly prime riding weather here in central NY

Thanks dirtybrain for the suggestion but I already pulled da trigger!!

And thank you too Saafrican, and welcome to the mad house that is V-Twin!!

Whoever has the best price. Today I bought a pair of tires from J&P cycle. They used to have poor service when they were first bought out by a larger company but I'm haveing good luck with them now. The Metzeler ME 888 Whitewall tires I just bought are in stock and I expect to have them within a week.

I don't pay much attention to the date codes. If the tire is in good shape when I put them on they'll be fine for me because I go through about 4 tires a year. They wear out. They never sit so long that I have to worry about dry rot.

25000 miles from a REAR tire?!? Hard to believe. I know riding style makes a big difference. Does this guy only drive on wet grass? I tour and the best tires I ever get will give me 10,000 miles.

I agree with that statement. I run Elite 3 and see no difference in milage which if I could keep my hand off the throttle I might get 10k. The front lasts much longer.
Cheers to you Dave for being able to tour like that.

Date codes make a difference when the tire is 3 or 4 years old when it shows up at your door

Sorry I'm so late to this thread, but for your specific application, assuming you will need to have them mounted and balanced, Microbore would have been my choice. Last time I bought tires I spent hours looking at pricing and shipping and cost of mounting and balancing... Called them and the tire price was a little more than ordering, but included mount and balance (wheel off the bike). Price came out to roughly the same as ordering and having someone mount and balance.

Took delivery on the new tires. Took the new tires & wheels to a local motorcycle place in Central Square to have them mounted and balanced. They did a total shidt job. Took me at least an hour to clean the smudge marks off the WWs from the tire tools. Balance on the back tire was pretty good. Front wasn't anywhere near close. Old weights were still in the same place and the dot wasn't on the air valve. Total fuk up, they did nothing to the front tire as far as balancing. I ordered weights from J&P and balanced the front myself, perfect now.

Don't want to bad mouth them in public but if interested PM me and I'll tell you where NOT to take your bike, for anything. Reminds me... I've been meaning to call them and advise the boss man about his dumb fuk "tech".
