What size axles?

I'm thinking about putting a heritage softail type 16" front wheel/tire on my 02 FXD with my wide glide front end and need to know the axle size on the heritage front end. Is it the same as the dyna?

Don't both bikes use a 1" axle?

I believe both bikes do use a 3/4" axle and the only thing you should have to do is muck with the spacing.

Front fender wont clear the 16" wheel, by looking at the pics... try looking one on e-bay...

What kind of 'trees are you using? (my wife wants a wideglide or mid-glide front for her FXDL)

I found out also at another site that both axles are 3/4". Should be do-able.
I'm sure I would have to change the front fender, wonder if a heritage fender would work? If the fender mounting tabs are the same height up the sliders as my superglide I guess it would. The trees are Ness. Thanks.

Talking What size axles?

stev1955
They are the same size. All you have to do is space it properly. I
had one on my '98 FXD which I installed. I was running a raked wide
glide trees, a 16" Rev Tech spoked aluminum wheel, Dunlop tire and
Fat Boy frt fender. I thought the setup looked good but I just liked
the 21" frt wheel better, looks wise. Here's a pic so you can get an
idea of how it looks. This setup is also for sale. Pops.

What size axles?

03flstfi,
His bike looks like it has standard narrow glide fork sliders and tubes.
Are you saying the 02 model is different? My forks are stock other
than raked trees. By the way thanks for the good words on my bike.
stev1955,
I wanted to change to the Fatboy or Heritage headlight and tin but
the height of the steering head is shorter on Softail frames. The tin
will be a inch or two short. I did alot of research to find this out.
Even if you bought an entire Fatboy or Heritage frt end it will not fit.

Pops - seeing a picture of your fxd some time ago gave me the idea to change to a 16" wheel. I always liked the look of that on your bike.
On mine the fork tubes and sliders are stock 02 FXD. Also tire, wheel and fender. I just want to change the wheel to a 16" laced and get a dunlop/HD
specific tire in 16" to match the stock rear tire. If that is a fatboy front fender I may go with that style. I decided against the heritage fender.

stev1955,
That is a late 90's OEM Fatboy fender I had on the bike. Like I said I
also have a stock narrow glide frt end other than the raked wide glide
trees. The fender will require 1/2" spacers but otherwise bolts up.
The wheel just needs to be centered with axle spacers, pretty simple
for a decent wrench. The rotor and caliper will bolt up with no mods.
Good luck with your mod and email me if you have any questions.
Here's a pic of the bike after I took the 16" off. Some like it and some
dont.

03flstfi,
That shouldnt effect mounting a different wheel unless the rotor
bolt pattern has changed also. Did HD also change rotor size?

pops,

I know the caliper and related mounting points changed. The rotors are different, but I dont know exactly how much different. (heve nothing here to compare against)
And no, it should not affect the mounting of the wheel.

Steve,
Just be sure the wheel you get is for '00-up so that it has the correct sealed bearings. (even though you can get the "conversion bearings" for earlier wheels)

Either way, its your ride, hope it works out well

Finally finished my project putting a 16" front wheel/tire on my 02 FXD with wide glide conversion. I got a 16" heritage laced front wheel off eBay, a matching HD Dunlop tire also off eBay. Got a Sumax composite fender, drilled mounting holes and had a local body shop paint it. To match the rotor to the caliper I had to find a way to space the rotor 3/4" out from the wheel and after much searching found a Accutronix mid-glide spacer that was .707 inch wide. Worked great. I took the wide-glide axle and fender spacers and had a local machine shop cut them down to my measurements to accomodate the wider wheel than the stock 19". Came together great but took longer than I expected to gather everything. Since the front axle is 1/2" lower to the ground with the 16" wheel the steering is noticeably tighter. When turning the bike leans over quicker and that was a suprise the first time I got on it. But overall I'm satisfied with the look and handling.

Damn Steve! your bike looks great! The front fender fits in perfect with
the style of your bike. Do you plan to lower the bike in the future? If you
do I can give you some pointers on lowering, also some pros and cons.
Looks like you're good at fabricating and improvising. It helps when you start
modifying motorcycles. Keep up the good work! Pops
