Dealers wouldn't fit tyres?
I just rang the dealer I bought my bike new from 3 years ago, to see if they would mount some Avons to my wheels if I brought the wheels in, and they won't mount tyres that aren't "recommended".
Is this the case over in the states too? Does everyone get other tyres mounted by independents?

I mount all my own. Dyna-Beads to balance and done.
They don't get any less recommended than this!

Thanks Shockwave, did a bit of a search, do you think this (in link following) technique is possible with HD tyres?

I don't see why it wouldn't work with HD tires. I'd give it a shot.

I couldn't get a dealer to mount a Screaming Eagle tire, because I didn't buy it there. Fu(k 'em.

Most dealers here will only mount them if youget the tires from them , they claim liability , but we know it's greed.

Ok cool, yeh I thought that was the case, either I didn't buy it there or some silly liability rubbish. Oh well, I'll just give my money that I was offering them to the guy I'm getting the tyres from, their loss. They don't even service my bike, I do that, oh well what a pity.
I will look into dyna beads and mounting my own in the future though, doesn't look too hard, I just don't want rim damage, and the beads seem logical in how they work.

Wrong, it is a liability thing, we don't know where the tires have been, how they were stored, or if they were seconds, or rejects.
If anything goes wrong, it's our ass on the line, as we would have been the last one to have worked on the tires/wheels.
Don't be so quick to judge, this is not only HD dealership policy, but also at any Indy that has any integrity.

Which is easily worked around by having a sign or something clearly visible to the client stating that the shop isn't liable if the client doesn't buy the tires/parts from your shop. Liability-101. Most of the indy shops in my area have signs like this or have the client sign a waver of some form before doing the install. Don't know about dealerships because I don't spend much time in them.
Note, if it was purely a liability issue then buying tires online or via mail order or directly from the manufacturer wouldn't be the big business/industry it is today because clients would have a hard time finding a place to install them due to the liability issues you claim.

Now that is a load... The shop buys the tires from some supplier. The shop doesn't know or have any control over where the supplier gets the tires from or how they were stored prier to delivery to the shop. The shop has to take the word of their supplier.

What do you mean by 'seconds'? If you mean that they were used, then that can easily be determined by inspecting the tires for wear. Don't even have to get that close to tell.

If the parts were rejects, and the manufacturer allowed them to leave the factory, then the manufacturer is liable not the shop or the supplier. Rejects should never leave the factory. They are usually melted down and recycled.

See above (Liability-101)...

Thanks for clarifying that this is in fact HD policy.

The closest HD Dealer to me,Thunder Creek in Chattanooga TN,mounted Metzelers on my bike ...I bought the tires online from Dennis Kirk...they didnt hesitate and didnt even ask where I got them...I was having some other work done though...local indy wont mount anything he dont sell...charges $11 a pop if you bring the wheels in...not really a bad deal...

Wrong. My local Honda shop will mount my tires no matter where I buy them.
Typically law suits go after the mfg. Install it right and you shouldn't have anything to worry about.
