FXDBI Street Bob - Swapping 160 for 180 Tire

Hey all. I have an 06 FXDBI that I'm thinking of installing the 180 wide tire kit on. Can someone give me a rough idea of how much wider the rear tire will be in it's inflated state from the stock 160? While it's a fairly cheap mod, I'm trying to determine if it's worth the time and effort to make the switch if there's not much of a noticable difference in looks.

Also, for those of you who made a swap for a 200 tire on your stock rim, can you tell me what the exact tire size was and also what brand of tire you used?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I put the 180 on my 2006 Low Rider. Looked awesome! By the way, you don't need the kit. Just get the tire that's in the kit. That's what I did.

Thanks for the reply! So I take it that there is definately a noticable difference in tire width in going with the 180 mm tire? Also, thanks for the suggestions in just purchasing the tire. I had planned on having the dealer do the swap and I'm not sure if they will do the swap without me purchasing the entire kit. It's worth asking about though. I'll also call around to some other shops and see what they charge to simply install the tire.

Thanks again...........Ta2d

Some have installed the 180 without any other mods needed. MANY have installed the 180 and had wiring issues with the rear signal harnesses.

Make sure they are tucked tight against the inner side surfaces of the fender. If your dealer will not do the install without the kit, go to an indy.

By the way, the 180 is a little over 10% wider than the 160. Most who look at your bike will not notice the difference. I think you will experience a little wood each time you see it though. Kinda like the ole lady going from a 32b to a 34c. You will appreciate it each time you look.

One last thing, it is not recommended that you install a 200 tire on a rim narrower than 5.5 inches.

Here are a couple pics of my lowered 06 FXDI with the 180 (no kit) and a couple pics from Harley which give info about the 180 kit:

claydbal is reading this now saying WTF is this?
have run the 160, 170, 180 on my 06 dyna. straight line traction was non remarkable. fitment was easy on all sizes with no other mods. handling was slowed the wider i went however. from all the experimenting, which includes mileage, traction, handling, i think the oem tire is best.

note, the oem 160 dunlop will step out quicker in hards corners, but is predictable. but--it will turn into the corners quicker, so there is a tradeoff.

Thanks for the replies! I think I might go for it! BTW, on the subject of a 200 mm tire, does anybody know where you can purchase a 17" x 5.5" rim so it would be safe to run a 200mm tire?

I think you will find to go with a 17" x 5.5" rear wheel, you will have to custom build one. You can get a 5.5" hoop and lace it to your current hub or you can go through a company such as hdwheels.com and have them build it (better have deep pockets).

I have read where some guys have had to use a spacer to obtain correct rear sprocket alignment and clearances.

Your original msg asked just how much wider one tire is than the other.

160mm tire = 6.3 inches wide
180mm tire = 7.08 inches wide
200mm tire =7.87 inches wide.
