A big mahalo to HDWRENCH (GMR), Geoge's Garage, and all of you on the forum for helping me put together a sweet-running machine! Once all the parts got here, it only took 3 evenings to put the whole thing together (with a few phone calls to Steve for advice).
I got my first 24 miles in today (cut short by dinner and major rains), and even while nursing it into the break-in, I can really hear and feel the difference.
The jugs look sharp, and sound real punchy with the cam and higher compression, without being too rough. I have some gear whine, but not obnoxiously so-- kind of like an old hotrod. The Crane ignition was really easy to set up, and even lets you dial the rev limiter down to 3500 rpms for an idiot proof break-in.
I'm still running the stock carb (bumped to #50 idle jet and #205 main) until Mr. Mikuni graces me with his presence next week, but you can tell that the power is right there, waiting to be unleashed.
For tools, I purchased the cam bearing puller and installation plate, from George's, and they arrived quickly and worked flawlessly. I also got the wrist pin puller, which came in handy for a number of different things. The oil pump alignment pins were fairly useless, though, as I ended up just spinning the rear wheel to align the oil pump. For the wrist pin circlips, someone on this forum posted a picture of a needle nose pliers that he notched out a little in front-- it works great!
Now, I'm looking forward to the "ride it like you stole it" phase!
