Shift to Neutral

In my manual, it is pretty clearly stated that neutral is a half step up from first. NOT a half step down from second.

I have no trouble going from 2nd to Neutral. Is this 'normal' or is the manual correct in saying you should only get into Neutral from first, and not second?

It doesn't matter. Neutral is 1/2 way between 1st & 2nd gear. They're just trying to describe where neutral is.

According to my 04 FXD book, it isn't supposed to go to neutral from second, only from first (yes, i know we can sometimes manage it, but thats not how its designed)

Dont know why harley designed their transmission to only go into neutral from first when its between 1st&2nd AND 2nd&1st. Think it would work either way.

I must have the new "universal" trans on my 05 softail cuz theres been a few times
when I thought I was in 1st (while downshifting at a stop) ive actually been in neutral Maybe i'll have the dealer fix it since its still under warranty

Going from second to neutral is perfectly normal. Going from first to neutral is also perfectly normal. This is because first and second are equally apart from each other, and neutral is in between the two.

You're not homosexual, are you ?

Oh ****, I really, seriously, think I am gonna **** myself this time.

I don't know what to say, other than:

Well as long as you waive with your right hand to the bike next to you it is ok to go to neutral from second gear. At least that is what my manual says.

Don't listen to these guys. Your transmission is malfunctioning if it goes from second to neutral. This condition is especially dangerous when you are using engine braking during decelleration. If you hit neutral when you think you're in first, not only do you not slow down as quickly, but then your transmission will make those embarrasing grinding sounds when you pull in the clutch again and shift to an actual gear. I had to complain loud and long about my Wide Glide doing this, but finally they paid attention to me when I made a big scene in the showroom on a Saturday afternoon, in front of other potential customers who'd stopped by after the Flower and Patio Show was over.
Needless to say, they gave me full purchase price, plus the full retail value of the accessories and labor I had in the bike on a trade for an '05 Limited Edition (Uncataloged) Screamin' Eagle Heritage Softail. They let me have it for the suggested MSRP ($32,000 minus my '04 Trade-in) to boot!. These don't even show up as being produced this year! They said only 12 will be made worldwide and as far as they know the rest went to collectors (not hard core enthusiasts like myself) so I will probably never see another on the street. The CVO folks have specially modified the transmission to shift from either first OR second to neutral without damage, so it's on the cutting edge. It's one of those "sleepers" too, with no gaudy badges, etc. to let the unsuspecting sap in the next lane know you're not to be trifled with. They told me to only bring it to them for service, too. Since Harley only let the "Cream of the Crop" in on this release, they don't want the other dealers to be jealous that they didn't get one.

Bottom line?
I'd pitch a fit. Call 'em out on a Saturday when the shop is full. They'll listen to reason then, yessiree!
