Question Maintenance Guidance

Just had a custom built, but don't like to be a slave to a shop. Can anybody help a completely new rookie to the V-Twin by pointing out the best method for me to learn the ropes around a bike from front to back? I'm looking for info covering changing the oil to changing a tranny. BTW, I have 100 inch RevTech in a pro-street style bike that scares the hell out of me!

Maybe a good book, etc. Any help would be appreciated. I'm the kind of guy who can change the clutch in his car, but don't know squat about motorcycles. I suppose I can just hack away, but I like to do things knowing what I'm doing from the getgo.

Who ever sold the bike should also have the info you need for sale. If not contact Revtech and the company that made the trans (if not the same) and get a manual from them. Most shops I have been to or heard about seem to be willing to let the info out if you ask. Most are real riders that would rather not see you pushing your bike home and help any way they can. Just pick up the phone. You are in a unique position here 'cause yours is not HD. That is not a bad thing but not to many folks here have the info you need. A lot of common sense ideas will help because they are similar. You might try the CHOPPER page. And by all means, post your findings so that others might learn something. Happy motoring, it's only metal, rubber and plastic remember, do not fear.

Relax pal. If I had built my own bike, you think I'd be asking where I could get an F-ing manual??? Thanks to the many helpful replies I've gotten, I can see you're one to be ignored. So keep your common sense straight.

No need to jump on Mark's case John. You posted the conflicting info...on top of that Mark is a good guy. Once you've been here a while you'll know the good guys from the jerks...until then you're the FNG, and should go get Mark another beer...

As far as the tech info goes, you should be able to purchase a service manual from Revtech for your engine, and a manual from whoever built your tranny...and in case you don't know of it www.nightrider.com is a good site for tech info on bikes.

You might try a Haynes repair manual...they publish one titled "HARLEY-DAVIDSON BIG TWINS (70 - 99) BOOK" and it has a lot of general info in there like how to bleed your brakes, remove a wheel take apart your suspension etc. If your bike is radically different from a standard Harley, it might not give exact advice on YOUR bike, but it will give you a general run-down of what you need to do to take care of a bike, what to watch out for etc.

Ride Safe,
Nick

"having just built a custom at a local shop."

With all due respect to those who have decided to defend the offender and jump on the new guy, read the first sentence in this post. Now read it again.

Would you suppose I walked into a LOCAL SHOP and brought in a frame, said hello to puzzled mechanics and started to build my own bike? I think you guys are so bent on preserving your know-it-all mentality that you instinctively jump on new guys to show we aint crap and had better bring a six-pack the next time I show up here.

Now that you've ALL been corrected, I suppose I'm STILL the ass and had better just go away. I came here looking to learn something about bikes by chatting with people in the know only to find the people in the know don't want to teach you crap lest their seniority and position be threatened.

Get a goddamned life and realize you're in front of a computer. THAT is the extent of your position here at the forum.

Good bye from California and I'll see ya when I see ya...Rednecks.

Sheesh, some people take things way too seriously! Chill out a little John, there's nothing wrong with someone asking for a little clarification! Especially when he was polite about it You should see some of the other forums (not necessarily bike related), they'll jump down your throat the first chance they get!

It also depends on what type of custom you built. If it was from someplace like Bourget's or Big Dog, getting some form of manual shouldn't be too hard I would think. If you got a local builder to make you one, I would go into the shop with the bike and do a walkthrough, taking notes as you go (that is of course if they don't have any documentation for you).

Good luck!
