Gold Key Falls Apart!!
This morning I took out my Gold Key which I often wear on a chain. I wanted to wear it while shopping. I look at it and the round barrel lock protion was gone!! The damned thing fell off sometime this week while I was wearing it.
I couldn't believe it. The fricken Gold Key fell apart!
I call the dealer and tell the parts guy who sold me the Golf Key package that I was making a warranty claim for the defective Gold Key. He sends me to the parts desk (two different parts operations). They scurry about for near a half hour only to tell me that they have to call Harley on Monday but that they might not replace it because there was some kind of memo issued by the MOCO about people who damage their Gold Keys.
I started to do the fast burn. I told them that I didnot damage the Gold Key. I was wearing it as jewelry and the damned thing fell apart. They calmed me down and told me to wait to see what the MOCO said on Monday.
I am so pissed off I could spit!! I want my Gold Key and I want it functional!! Yarrrrghhhh!

Yikes. Good luck, man. Hope they replace it.
Not to try and worry you, but when they gave me my key (some 3 months after I bought the bike!!), they told me to hold on to it, because it was not replaceable. Thought that was a rather unacceptable position.

The barrel lock portion is glued (or otherwise affixed) onto the body of the Gold Key. Fixing it would be a snap for them. They just cut a new barrel to the key code and affix it back onto the key body exactly the way they did it in the first place.
But I think you're right... I think they are going to come up with some bullshit excuse and say that they won't do it. That means that i will have to find a locksmith who can cut the barrel and maybe weld it on the key body with a microtorch so it doesn't fall off again.
Just thinking about it really aggravates me.

Maybe the MoCo figured no one would ever take them out of the display case.

I'll give all you gold key owners some advice - and HD as well - gold cannot be glued. More specifically, glues cannot adhere to gold. Certainly solid gold and probably in the higer karat ratings where the gold density is higher.
Gold is .. well gold because its a special metal with special properties besides just being shiny. One of the best concuctors (of either heat or electricity), never corrodes (meaning rust / disintegrate), extremely malealble. Plus nothing will stick to it (peramnetly).
Here's an example: in the mid '90s Intels pentium chips were starting to generate enough heat, that they moved to a top cap that had some gold in it to aid a bit in heat conduction. At the time we were gluing the heatsinks on with conductive glue - on the previous chip packages the glue would remain bonded for at least 4 yrs. Within months of the change heatsinks were falling off when companies like Dell or Gateway were shipping product. Huge hulla-abloo - call in the chemists and metalurgists - product lines are hemmoraging. Conclusion ... gold is a "fine" metal and will not allow adhesives to adhere .... at least not in rates that can be specified or garunteed. And thus is why Intel moved to thermal grease and heatsinks that are clipped or mechanically restrained.

Slim: The so-called Gold Key is not gold, it's brass if I'm not much mistaken.

It sounds to me like the moco never intended for the keys to be even used as a regular change key. I hope they can replace it for you. At least you still have the bike. I have been in the reverse situation once, and it stung like a bee.

Yeh, it's brass and not gold.
Maybe you could get a regular replacement and have it plated with REAL gold, not phony gold. I would look into that myself. Probably cost a few hundred dollars but would be real.
