Not your typical oil thread...

If only these Sailors had started a thread here before servicing their aircraft - this could have been avoided.

Hell, they killed the USS Fort Worth by running it low on oil.

Ya got to wonder about the volunteer military. I'm hearing a lot of people talk about the low quality of staff. Many not able to read and comprehend at a level proportionate to the maintenance manuals.

It's kind of like the education system. The standards just keep getting lowered until the "numbers" are satisfied. Reading comprehension probably isn't as much of a qualifier as it once was. I wonder what the ASVAB looks like now.

This was a major fuk up, but like any other it remains to be seen how and why. I'm betting being in a rush had much to do with it and possible a bit of complacency. Back in my maintenance days a brand new out of the crate motor was hung on an A-10. At the time I was an instruments/avionics type and the guys doing the engine run on this thing called me saying they weren't getting good oil pressure. I ran out to take a look and when I got there they had the thing idling with zero pressure. My first question was if the engine was serviced before they cranked it up. They said it was so I swapped out the pressure gauge with no change. I told them they needed to shut it down and make sure it was serviced. The guy running it told me he was sure it was serviced and told me the needle would move slightly if the throttle was pushed up. Told them again they needed to shut it down.

Well, turns out it had not been serviced and died an untimely death.

I heard the USS Zumwalt didn't make it to the other side of the Panama canal when it deployed. Limped into port on one shaft. So it's not just the Navy, the contractors are having quality issues too.

The issue with contractors is "best value". When the government solicits for technical proposals - then only considers pricing proposals as a means to evaluate "best value" - they get exactly what they ask for. Cheap labor with no technical ability or experience.

Cheaper mistake than being captured by the Iranians! Doesn't help propel the career much though.

I asked a neighbor of mine who is a contract wrench for the Airforce. He says the issue is vacancies. And that the Navy compounds it by transferring people away from beached units. Either to schools or units afloat. He also suspects that the mistake was prolly made in an office. And then printed out onto a work order, causing an error long before the oil ever reached the aircraft.

Haven't heard much about the Iranian pirate fleet since we cleared our guns over their heads a few weeks ago.

If that's the case then there is a huge problem with training or experience and it could very well be related to the caliber of people they're getting these days. During my military career I very rarely came across anyone that I felt shouldn't be doing the job they were doing. There were plenty that just plain had no business in the military, but from a skills perspective most were pretty damn good at what they did.

I bet if they had used SYN3 they wouldn't have had a problem though.

Problem in the Navy is you train and make rate in one type of ship or aircraft , and then after a year or two , they transfer you to a completely different type. Spent 2 years learning the ordnance systems of A-4's , A-6's , A-7's , F-4's and F-14's , and they send me to a P-3 squadron!

The AF is no different. When I started out as a young lad I went through tech school as an autopilot tech learning B-52 and F-111 autopilots. Never worked an airplane with an autopilot for nearly 8 years after that. Spent my initial years on A-10's that had a relatively simple stability augmentation system. Similar principles of operation, but not at all an autopilot system. This actually turned out to be a plus though because I ended up qualified to work every part of an A-10.

Then I ended up on the KC and EC-135, which had the same autopilot as the B-52, but so much time had passed it took me 3 months to become familiar with it again. Even with that I worked hard at becoming qualified on as many systems as I could in the 2 short years I was on that airplane.

Then I got into the flying business on the C-5 and never looked back.
