Got a few laughs out of that. I've seen it in a # of different versions.
However, I should point out that "ranks in the Navy" refer to officers. Enlisted people above E3 work in a rating (job) and have a rate (pay grade). E3 and below are referred to as non-rated.

I must have got that wrong in boot camp, I thought they said rate was your job and rank was your pay grade, but that was 47 years ago, so I might have unremembered it wrong.
But now that you twisted my memory, yours sounds kinda like something they tried to pound into my thick head.
But to be fair, I did skate threw boot as a battalion yoeman and rode a bicycle around San Diego RTC while everybody else marched. Missed alot of those indoctrinations that were meant to square me away. Guess they knew from the getgo that was a lost cause.

After 20 years active duty and another 13 as federal civil service for the Navy, it's kinda hard for me to forget.

Strikers.
I grew up in the Navy. Dad was a CM, I was an ADR; we were both mechanics.
I'm like Ahar though. I was remembering rate as skill and rank as pay grade. Oh well.

Isn't it comforting to know that, whether or not you can see him, there's always a Master Chief around to keep an eye on things?

I finished my 20 years in the Air National Guard. It was a little confusing because the Air Force uses some of the same words as the Navy, for E-7 thru E-9, but arranges 'em differently. They have...
Master Sgt
Senior Master Sgt
Chief Master Sgt.
Only 9s get called 'Chief'.

Yep, some differences. The grade of Chief Petty Officer (E-7) was established in 1893. Coast Guard also uses it. Senior Chief Petty Officer (E-8) and Master Chief Petty Officer (E-9) were established in 1958 right after I entered the Navy. Pretty sure that all services had the E-8 and E-9 pay grades established then too. Navy and Coast Guard use the terms: Chief (E-7), Senior Chief (E-8) and Master Chief (E-9).
Most definitely gets confusing between the services though.

Thank you. That drops a few puzzle pieces into place for me. Do you know if the Army and Marines added the words 'Senior' and 'Master' in the same way?
