Looking so much forward to the 4th

Man,

I have been covering my guys and gals (on call) as they take their vacations!

I do my best to treat those that pad my pay check with the utmost respect! Hell, I own a sizable percentage of the company and there is only 6 total employees! There is only 4 who have on call duties, and they are paid very well for just being on call!

I have come to that road block however...It's my turn for a vacation (DAY) at least. I took July 3 off so I have a long weekend to ride off! Sure hope the weather is good! Funny, I'm the boss, yet I hate to use that terminology. I have not had a day off for over a year, not even a holiday, and I give my folks upteen time off for personal as well as happy time! And low and behold two employees are angry that I am taking the day before the forth of July off! This despite the fact that I did not even take a day off when my last son was born, as it was an employees 40th birthday! Hell, I'm 47 and having another little tyke! I've come to the conclusion that no matter how well an american worker is treated, they think they are being screwed! Oh well....I'm still taking the 3rd off!!

I was in the same boat as you for years. I had 15 direct reports, and a total of 375 employees. I finally came to the realization that they were having more fun than I, and they were treating me as a job, not like friends as I was treating them. Called a staff meeting in a conference room, not a restaurant as usual. Bought stale donuts, not breakfast as usual. Told them that after all the whinning and bitching I was very dissapointed, I expected them all to do their job, which included covering for me, or they could find a job somewhere else. Nightime calls dropped off, no more bitching, and Division profits went up. Good Luck!

way to go rick. glad to hear someone covers their employees. i went a different road and went fed employment...the only way to go...didn't make millions, but retired at 54 and had every holiday off that they've ever invented or thought about.
i give ya credit cause most business' don't give a crap if ya get a holiday or not...and you were there to cover them while they were off.
