Parking in a handicapped spot
I ride with two different friends who have a handicapped tag on their motorcycles. Sometimes, when the parking lots are full or there is no up close parking for our bikes, we will both park in a handicapped spot together. They are legal because of their tags but I may not be. I want to get some opinions on this.
I feel that if we had arrived in their car, we would park in the spot and there is not an issue, but on a separate vehicle, I could get a ticket, even though I am not taking up any more space. We are both in the same handicapped space.
Both of my friends would be willing to go to court to argue the ticket with me, but that still my not help the letter of the law.
I was wondering if anybody else does this.
Also, what is the feeling of the law enforcement community out there on this subject?
If there is a thread already out there on this subject, please point me to it. I searched and did not find one, but maybe I missed it.

My thoughts on this subject would be quite simple. Unless you are handicapped and have the appropriate tag/plate, stay out of handicapped spaces. Whenever I see someone w/o tag/plate in a handicapped space I feel compelled to inform them that those spaces are for physical, not mental handicaps.

C'mon now. Let's not be lazy. Don't park in the handicaps.

Nothing to think about, you aren't allowed to park there.

When I see cars park in the handicap space and the person who gets out of the car shows no sign of being handicapped, I always have to resist the urge to take my key and scratch a big handicap symbol into their paint. Childish, I know, but dam it would feel good.

I'm always curious when I see this happen, too. Assuming the vehicle is properly marked, one thing we need to keep in mind that not all handicaps are visible and immediately apparent. However, I've gotta say that the folks who park in HC parking spots just because they're lazy or in a hurry are........
:loser:
and should be hammered by the po-lease.

My sister has MS, is wheelchair bound and we use a modified van. I know the troubles of HC parking. My father is WWII disabled vet, has a placard, and quite frankly should'nt be driving with or without the special plates.
What I don't understand is someone with the ability of riding a motorcycle , one that takes great agility, good motor skills and balance and still need a HC placard for there motorcycle? I'm not being critical here just curious................
In my opinion HC spaces should be reserved for those with serious mobility problems and if your one of them should'nt be driving, someone else should.
There's to many people out there who have these parking priviliges who seem to get along fine all day until it comes time to park there car. They know who they are and are only scaming themselves.
Save those spaces for those with real phy. disabilities.

Same here. I usually see the fat lazy bastards driving granny’s car to the grocery store so they can park up front in the handicap spaces. They park the car, grab granny’s HC tag out of the glove box, hang it on the mirror, look around to see who’s looking and literally run into the store. That pisses me off.
Leave the HC spaces for the HC.
When I go shopping, no matter if it is to the mall or the grocery store, I park at the end of the parking lot. My butt needs the exercise, and I have a little more respect for my vehicle. I don't need some retard banging his door into mine. Try it some time, pick out a car that is "sharking" the parking lot for that spot next to the front door. Park your car at the end and start walking. 90% of the time that person is still circling around the lot by the time you get inside the front door.

I was thinking the same thing - if they need a HC placard, what the hell are they doing on a bike? .... trike?

In Ohio if the handicapped person is not physically with the vehicle then a ticket can be issued. This was to deal with the large number of stolen, and borrowed, handicapped placards that people would hang on their rear view mirror. Obviously hard to catch, but something I used to watch for. Most people would leave the handicapped spot and pull into another spot when they saw a marked cruiser. I never had to approach anyone and would not have had I seen anything that apperared to be a disability (physical only of course).
Other states may have similiar laws, and even if they don't, stay out of em.

Most of the guys I know that ride bikes are on trikes and have their wheel chairs strapped to the back. One of them is paralized from the waist down, but still rides. Do some research and don't be critical of these guys. The enjoy the road just as much as we do.
