89 883 Dies under load

My wife has a 1989 883 Sportster. It was running great the other day when we rode across town. When we got ready to come back it ran like total crap, died as soon as it was under load, bucked and stalled. It runs okay without load.

What have I done so far? I pulled the carb and cleaned it out. Made sure the slide is working okay. The accelerator pump is okay. There do not seem to be any restrictions in the fuel line. The vacume line is connected and not crimped. I have tinkered with the timing with no improvement. I am at a loss. Any suggestions will be graciously accepted.

I assume you're running the stock carb and cam. In addition, you state you've verified fuel and air intake is ok (air intake and gas cap are "breathing"). With these things in consideration, I would check the coil, spark, plug wires, and battery. It is most likely the coil, ignition module, a ground, or ignition switch but I would focus on the coil and module.

One sign of failing electronics is when a component (like a transistor or IC) starts overheating on its own. For the coil, a break in a winding would disconnect when the coil heats up, causing loss/decrease in spark and resulting in the motor stalling. When it cools, the break reconnects and the bike/vehicle will start again and run until the procedure repeats. I'm betting it's the coil and/or module. I'd check to see if there is spark immediately after it dies.

I hope this helps.

Don't mean to seem like a simpleton, but I didn't see it mentioned.
Did you check/change the plugs?

I am gonna say the coil also.

I was having the same problem on my Sporty with an overheating coil. Got to the point where I would pull over and pour water on it to keep going. Once the water was poured on it everything was okay. Swapped the coil and problem went away.

Wife made the mistake of filling her car when the tanks at the station were being filled once. ONCE.
Same problems as you describe, so that's worth a shot...
