Well, I got a LED bulb to try in a direction indicator, and it don't fit. The stem is about a half millimetre too short to allow the dogs to get in. I'm gonna try reaming the socket with a Dremel, and I'll report back.

But the short answer is I don't know if it's a good thing for brightness. Should be a good thing for longer life, I guess.

My stock tail/stop housing definitely does not have enough room to take the bulb style replacement. Must get around to putting it back together

DrHeathenScum is the master on this subject, but I'm so cheap

LED "bulbs" are pure and simple garbage... unless you care not about brightness and visibility, stick with your incandescants, they are a lot brighter.

LEDs are like most things out there... you get what you pay for.

The Good Doctor is 100% correct. Pure Junk!
I bought some 1157 replacements and figured I'd install them in for turn signals.
First off, they didn't fit. The back part of the bulb interferred with the reflector of the lamp.
No biggie, they went in my spare parts bin. Figured I'd find a use for them some day.
A little while later, I installed one in the tail light of the Sportster. Burned out in less than a mile. Same thing in the Beemer and a buddies Sporty.
3 of the 4 have burnt out in a matter of hours.
Not only a wast of money but a safety factor as well. I don't really like running around with no tail light.

Ride Safe,
Vettster

I don't like the smaller LED replacement-type bulbs either. The regular incandescents are plenty good.

On the other hand, when combined in multiple units the LEDs have their place. Traffic lights, for example, are being slowly replaced nationwide with large array LED lamps. The are rather directional but they really show up in lowered visibility situations. The main reasons are: the smaller current draiin, they draw 50% or more less current, and the longevity, LEDs have an extremely long service life and seldom need replacement. They've changed almost all of them in the Sacramento area in the past three of four years.

Are the "bad" LED bulbs from JPCycle only? I saw replacement LED bulbs on the Kuryakyn site but now wonder about those? At about $40 a pop I would expect some kick-ass performance.

I ended up with the entire Kuryakyn Panacea system for the taillight and rear turn signals plus the Kuryakyn turn signal inserts for the front end of my dresser. Personally, I'm very happy with them as they are a great improvement over the stock incandescents. However, if you've got some money to play with, I'd honestly say to go with Dr. HeathenScum's Heavy Cycle stuff. Anyone who has ever used them, swears by 'em. They put everything else to shame. They are expensive but worth it. The Kuryakyns are not cheap but, for me, they did the job as intended and, so far, I've had no problems with them. You do need load equalizers with LEDs if you use the turn signal inserts since they use so little power and add very little load when in operation. The on-board self-cert computer software, particularly the anti-theft system, may read fault codes since LEDs appear as burned out bulbs to the system. The equalizers will add a false load which fools the electronics into thinking that standard incandescent bulbs are in place. I like the Kuryakyn system but if money isn't an issue, I'd give Dr. HeathenScum a jingle. He definitely knows his stuff.

I have purchased the turn signal LED's from drag specialties and I will tell they are bright!!! pricey but BRIGHT!!!. I run them on my road king and swapped out the front and rears so I have running lights on the rear and I have a stop light converter so my brakes work the turn signals also. I get alot of comments on how bright they are.

Those LED lights....

I also run the Panacea on both of my Road Glides, and they worked and installed flawlessly.

I switched out the 1157 bulbs on my trike with cheap LED replacements from Mid USA, and they are still working great. I did have to install a load equalizer. You also cannot install some LED with the flat HD turnsignal lenses. My trike uses a custom bullet shaped softail lense.

All of my bikes, including my two choppers, use LED in both the turnsigals and brake lights, and I haven't had a complaint one.

The LED's are much brighter, and I feel, a much more visible product.

I have also installed red LED light bars on my FXR chopper, and they light the whole engine up. Very inexpensive and easy to install.

Go to Heavycycles.com and get the real thing. DrHeathenscum didn't advertise himself enough (probably out of humility you know....) But he is correct in that you get what you pay for in this case. You're messing with visibility here and it ain't worth skimping to save a buck.

you people that think those pop-in bulbs are just as bright as the incandescents need an eye exam.
