GPS Info

I've been tossing around the idea of mounting a GPS on my bike. Not that I get lost, but another toy is always handy...

Anyone got some feedback or experience using a GPS on their rides? makes? models, software...

Any input would be appreciated....

There are many threads on the subject, do a search. I prefer the PDA type, cause I can use it for digital music and GPS at the same time, plus I have all my contact numbers with me.

I have a Garmin GPSMAP 60CS. Nice unit, color screen, 2 - double A's last about a day if you were not going to wire it into the bike.

Lots of good choices.

I ran a Garmin StreetPilot for several years on my Glide. I recently sold it and bought the new Garmin 2610, which has autorouting and a touchscreen. My advice, when you shop for a unit, is to look for one with a decent sized screen, good contrast so you can see it in the sunlight, and controls that are easy to use at 70mph.

Best system to mount them to the bike are the RAM mounts. They make cradles for most of the units. Then you get their handlebar clamp and the ball mounts and arm to mount the unit. I put a BMW power socket in my inner fairing, just below the ciggy lighter and wired the unit to that.

If you are looking for an inexpensive unit, try to find a used Garmin StreetPilot (not the streetpilot III or V) on Ebay. It should be about $150. They have a large monochrome screen that is very easy to read in the sunlight and can be upgraded with memory cards. If you want the best, pop for a Garmin 2610. You find where you want to go via a search screen, push the "go to" button, and it automatically calculates the route for you, giving turn-by-turn directions. Sweeeet! Expect to spend about $850 for the unit and cycle mount.

Good source to shop is www.gpscity.com They have a great assortment and very good prices.

The PDA units mentioned above are nice, but not waterproof. The Garmin units are fully waterproof.

TheTick is an unknown quantity at this point
Garmin V. Visible in direct sunlight, backlighting for the evening. Waterproof. And when properly mounted and wired, will not shut-off due to excessive vibration. Auto-routing while your own the road, in case you are looking for something after you've already planned your route. Price has been coming down as well, about $349 for the deluxe model. Includes maps and points of interests for the whole US and part of Canada.
