Trailer size

I'm wanting to haul 2 harleys to Myrtle Beach next week. What size of trailer do I need? Either enclosed or open.

That all depends on the size of the Harleys. What are they?

Trailers are for boats! Start them up and hit the throttle.

the two bikes are a Heritage and a Wide-Glide. The reason I'm taking a trailer is that my wife and her friend is going and she doesen't want to ride all the time, so she can use the truck while we are doing "better" things. If I was going by myself I would ride. Its just about 420 miles.

I bought a 6X10 single ax. It hauls ONE Ultra. My buddies all said by a twin ax and make it at least 7X14. I wish I had listened! I find living in the north and wanting to do a southern early spring trip south I have other friends that would love to come along. Trailering is about the only option when snow is on the ground! Being able to haul two or even four would be a much better deal if you can afford to go that big. Enclosed is the only way to go. You can always use it to store the bike in if needed.

Why is it that whenever anyone mentions TRAILER in this forum we have so many saying "Ride it" Why does anyone that wants to buy a trailer have to justify why? The reasons are many if you want to trailer, and you shouldnt feel inferior or less macho if you trailer vs. ride. I think this subject has been dealt with before. Will I trailer the 557 miles to Sturgis? Probably! I can put the wife in the airconditioned SUV, listen to some tunes, and get there refreshed and ready to ride as compared to pushing across South Dakota in 103 degree heat, wind blown, dehydrated, tired and deal with my complaining wife! Did that, done that! If I go alone, different story. Sorry I blew up!

trailers

I own a 7X12 enclosed, my buddy has a trailer that hauls 3 big bikes, sleeps 6, full shower, kitchen, shower, DVD player, Xbox. But when we went alone, we rode our bikes to Trailer Week!!

The bikes are only 8' long, so the issue is the width of the trailer. I Have a 7x14 enclosed and can squeeze 2 dressers and a softail in it with a lot of finesse. A 6' wide would be very tight unless the chocks and tie-downs were well placed. In fact, I would only try to haul 2 bikes in a 6' trailer if it was an open trailer. Not enough room in a 6' closed to get around the bikes to tie them down right. If you are looking at a closed trailer I would suggest a 7x12'. Easy to load and secure and not too bad to pull.

Why the dual-axle vs the single? Just curious (and I'm looking to buy one here shortly)

Gross Vehicle Weight. Weight of the trailer PLUS the weight of the load. Weight of the motorcycles and how the weight is distributed inside. Too heavy in the tongue vs too heavy to the rear. Will it tow and track correctly vs sway back and forth. I am not sure what size trailer needs surge or electric brakes. Can anyone help out here? I know from past experience with a U haul towing to Texas years ago I had some severe tracking problems due to too much tongue weight. If you only plan on one bike, a single ax is probably just fine. I am thinking about trading to a 7X14 twin axle.

petelogan is reading this now saying WTF is this?
Other advantage of twin axles is if you get a tire blowout.

I agree with most, 400 miles is a warmup ride.

I USE A 7X16 enclosed , two bikes side by side in the front of any enclosed trailer over 14 feet is one hell of a lot of tounge weight.

i woiuld use a 16 foot and haul 1 in the front and 1 right behind.
enclosed trailers are like a portable garage, thats what i use mine for at home

my 16 foot trailer weights #2700 empty. with about #300 tongue weight, with two atv's (#500 each)loaded sideways in the front tongue weight goes to #650. most reciever type hitches on trucks have a limit of #500 dead weight on the ball this goes up to #1000 using a weight distributing hitch setup..
two HD's side by side would be approx #1300 don't know what the hitch weight be then. (a lot)
