Is anyone's filter hangin' out in the breeze?

I installed a Ness Big Sucker and DFO on my RK this weekend. (Nice throttle response, more noise!) I was thinking of dumping the football air filter cover and getting one of those 5-bolt domed covers that basically just dresses up the end of the filter. I like the smaller look.

However... I'm now questioning the wisdom of leaving the (K&N) filter uncovered. When the bike's upright, the tank mostly covers the top of the filter. On the kickstand, the filter would be pretty exposed. I'm wondering if I wouldn't be asking for trouble when it rains. I could cover the filter if I had to when I'm not riding; I'm more concerned about how much water it might catch while underway.

Anyone have experience with such a setup in the rain? Does it suck, water that is, in a rainstorm?

Another option I've been pondering: Since I tend to commute in my Jeep when rain threatens, I could probably run with the filter exposed around town and swap it for the football before I hit the road.

Take it off and ride on. It won't suck water in. The worst that will happen is the water will wash some oil outta the element and make a mess on your cam cover. I've seen posts by several guys that run without them. They claim to have gotten performance gains. I'm skeptical of that. However, on the right bike an open filter looks cool. Before you buy a end cover, take of your chrome cover and place a blank CD on the end of the filter securing it with the bolt. You will be amazed how the chrome-like finish on the CD has a prizm like effect on the light that hits it.
