The evolution of Harley-Davidson police motorcycles during the 1930s

Harley started producing motorcycles for police departments just five years after they built their first motorcycle in 1903. Advancements were slow at first, but in the 1930's Harley's engineers began developing the accessories that are normally associated with modern police motorcycles. A nice collection of HD factory photos highlighting some of the advances made during that period.

Good article, thanks for posting. For some reason i have always liked the look of the police hard bags and the unlocking system.

we have a 1935 VLV that was in the Gypsy tour in 1935 - it was the escort in PD duty

today its been restored in the blue and gray colors and we use it at all the AMCA events and take it on the rides offered when we can

nice bike to ride the oil tank pump takes a bit to get use to, but other than that it will still run 85 MPH with no issues, soo the 100MPH mark they were sold by, is still in it for sure < getting it up to speed is one thing slowing it down is another -- johnjzjz

I still think that those pogo-stick tractor seats were the most comfortable ones ever made by the MoCo ...

I remember reading literature for an available "Parade Gear" for police duty. It was a very low first gear that let you crawl at a snail's pace without slipping the clutch all the time.

just sayin' .....
