Fog vs. Passing lights

Help please. Thinking of putting HD fog lights on engine guard, rather than passing lamps on tree. Do the fog lights provide as good illumination as the passing lamps? Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

fog lamps are generally a low intensity lamp aimed low to avoid reflecting back at the driver/rider under low visibilty/fog situations.

passing lamps are mounted high and illuminate ahead and to the sides to increase visibility on dark roads.

i would imagine both increase daytime conspicuity. although passing lamps being mounted and aimed higher would seem to be easier to see.

guess it depends on what youre after

I have the yellow lens passing lamps and they are very bright and conspicuous day and night. I have the non fluted lens so they work like spot lights rather than the flood light fluted lens. J & P Cycles has them.

Thumbs up

I also run the non-fluted yellow bulbs from JP cycles. I think the yellow bulbs stand out more to other vehicles on the road. Everyone seems to have the clear bulbs. I think that by seeing so many clear ones they kinda fade into the background. I believe the yellow tend to stand out and other vehicles take notice. Just my .02. Rick

This may be a dumb question to some of you, but why do they call the lights on the light bar "passing lights"? I'm trying to get the terminology straight in my head so that I understand what I read and hear from folks.

Passing Lamps/Fog lamps

I'm running both. When I have the the passing lamps on alone or with
the fogs, I get oncoming cagers flashing their brights more than I like,
especially on two lane roads, interstate no problem.

So, to keep the peace, I run the fogs which do a great job of illuminating
the road ahead and keeps the cagers from flashing. I noticed the passing
lamps flood the area ahead. I've tried adjusting these lamps according to
the manual, no luck. Also, deliberately aimed them low to see if this would
help stop the oncoming flashes from cars, no luck. So, I use them on the
interstate, not on two lane roads, with exceptions.

And, at other times, I don't care. They're on as my safety comes first.
There is a limit to my consideration for the 4 wheelers.

99% of them have no conception or care how vulnerable a biker is
as he/she rides the roads.

I run my spots (passing) all of the time. I seldom get a cage that flashes their high beams at me, but it do happen! I agree, my safety is more important, I want to be seen.
