Last year for shovel engines?
Was 83 the last year made, sold as 84 or they really did produce any motors during 84?

83 was the last year they were produced by Harley, but they had some that were not used in 83 and got put into 84 bikes.

I don't have it any more but I have owned a 1984 belt/shovel. Sure wished I still had it!

If your '89 FXR had chain drive someone put it on. 1989 was the 5th year for belt drive.

83 was the last year the engine was produced but some 84's had the "old" engine. It's replacement ( the EVO ) was used through '99 and was replaced with the twin cam in '00 but i heard of very few evo's released in '00. I think that is because they were starting their rebuilt engine swap program then.

Evo's were replaced by the TC's in '99 on touring and Dyna's. Softails kept the Evo until '00.
HD released some CVO "custom vehicle ops" FXR's (3 & 4) along about 2000. Think they did it for 2-3 years.

84 was the last year for Shovelheads in a stock production bike. They were available in 84 FL's (not FLT chassis) and FX (not FXR or the new FXST Softail). The 1984 FXR, FLT and the new FXST Softail were available in EVO engines. The rest of the line still had Shovels and 4 speeds. In 1985 the entire line was EVO with one exception, the 1985 FLHP Police bikes. Technically the last year Shovel is the 1985 FLHP.

Just to be clear, Evo's were replaced with the twin cam in 99 in Touring and Dyna as you say and in 99 the Softail still had the EVO. In 2000 the Evo in the Softail was replaced with the Twin cam. The last production year for the Evo was 1999 however in 2000 the FXR4 (a CVO, not standard production) still had an Evo and is the last year for the Evo.

Just one small correction.
The EVO motor was introduced Mid-Year of 1984. The first 1984 FLT/FXR models were equipped with the Shovelhead motors.
Then Mid-production 1984, they were replaced with the EVO motors.

The clutch was the big mid year change for the FXR, the Evo
was the motor for the full 84 year. There are a couple of cases where the Evo was in a 83 FXR, first was here, someone said he had an 83 FXR w EVO. The second, I saw an FXRT, given by HD
to Malcolm Forbes.

Alrighty. How does that relate to this thread?
Was it a Shovel or an Evo?

There were no Shovel FXR's in 84.
The EVO motor was introduced for the Model year 1984 which started in mid 1983 (date of production). Long ago a friend of mine had one of the first EVO FXR's produced, model year 1984 and a date of production in August 1983.
