Thrust wants to know Dino or Syn?
Brit looking for advice on a trip across US

A couple of us from the UK are looking at riding from LA to Orlando in February.

So looking for advice or tips.

Is it a bad time to ride any part of this route. Is there some must see places on the way.

we can get a good deal on one way rental for bikes needed to be moved across for Daytona- hence the time.

Really would appreciate any advice good or bad guys.

Thanks

Best advice I can give is plan PLENTY of time for the trip so it stays fun. If you are staying at hotels along the way, check out http://www.bestwestern.com/rewards/b...de-rewards.asp, especially if you belong to HOGS. They offer some decent perks and generally have good rooms for a good rate.

Of course it will be cold - very cold - in February, but being from the U.K. myself (Norfolk) I know you can handle it.

There are many nice spots to visit along the way, especially through Arizona and New Mexico. It will be a trip to remember, for sure!

Out of LA take I-10 thru Arizona stop at Tombstone for a day or so. You will not regret it. crossing the continental divide will be cold and probably wet. across the Great Plains - Texas will be windy. Plan to stop a day or more in New Orleans too. You will not regret that either. Enjoy your ride and don't get in a hurry...

February makes for a pretty tough trip. Obviously you'll have to stay to the south or you'll freeze to death.

The only thing I could suggest along the southerly route is New Orleans. There is probably some cool stuff to see in Texas but I haven't spent enough time there to make recommendations.

The Gulf Coast through Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida is very lovely IMHO.

Are you going to Disney? Is that why you are headed to Orlando?

Keep in mind that February is smack in the middle of the CA rainy season, and the storms can be heavy and last for days. Pack a good rain suit. If you take I40, Nevada, Northern Arizona and New Mexico can be very cold and snowy that time of the year. Heated gear is a good idea, especially if you plan on a lot of night riding. The Grand Canyon is a must see. I kinda like it in winter, as there's fewer tourists. Did I mention snow, cold? Some years are milder than others. You might get lucky, but be prepared.

If your in L.A. you need to see Hollywood Hills
Stop off in San Diego
Take Interstate 10 that will keep you South in better weather
The Grand Canyon is nice
Texas has some great sites
New Orleans of course
Anywhere in Florida on your way down.

Good luck and bring some warm weather cloths

Unless have plans for New Orleans I would bypass it and Catch I-12 at Baton Rouge and it runs back into I-10 at the Mississippi Border .. Would stay on I-10 until got past Pensacola then take the Coastal Hwy 98 along the Gulf Beaches of FL Stopping where you wish here and there along the way .. When Hwy 98 runs into Hwy 19 at Perry, FL Would Take 19 South a ways and check the map where might want to cross over to Orlando Hwy 40 would a good way to do it, but are many options where to cross over ..

Thanks for the posts so far guys. Was planning the trip only because I have some available time and the rental deal for one way was over half the normal huge price.

A little worried now about the cold and wet. In the North East of England we get both - not massive amounts of snow but lots of rain which kind of puts a damper on any riding.

How cold are we talking about - cold in Florida from what I can recall is what we in the UK call a hot summer!

Maybe I would be better off waiting till after Daytona and doing a one way back the other direction? What do you think?

You are going to run into some freezing weather, snow, and possible ice storm. This is one big country. Just because you are going across the south, don't discount all of the above. I have seen heavy snow and ice all across the south. Here in Oklahoma and the Texas panhandle it was 17 degreese last night. In the wind.

Is always hard to say, but we are talking a 5 day run here, at least 4 anyway if a true iron Butt Somewhere along the way will catch some nasty weather and some sub freezing temps .. Don't underestimate FL true down towards Miami stays fairly warm but up towards the North End where I live see below 30 F several times during the winter .. I made a Run from FL to AZ Mostly I-10 in Early April and had to wear Long Johns a couple of times even then ..

Just highlighting the major places - the route I was thinking about was (sort of)

LA, San Diego, Tucson, San Jose, San Antonio, Galveston, New Orleans, Pensacola, Jacksonville, Orlando - so kind of as southerly as you can get if that makes it any easier.

I wouldn't ride in the UK if there was snow or ice on the road so not sure if this "dream" is best kept as a dream for doing this early Feb.

Thrust

Once again - appreciate all who have contributed to the thread so far
