Handlebars, windshield and hard-bag questions

I am planning on changing the handlebars, and was wondering about dis-assembly. I presume, the headlight ring comes off, then the upper trim can be removed, and then I can remove the part around the handlebar clamps and ignition switch. Correct?

I was also wondering if I need a special windshield, since the headlight nacelle is so large. It's almost 12" across, and most windshields have a 9" cutout.

And, what is this switch for?

Can these round clamps be changed to something smaller, maybe side-mounted? Do I need new lids and hardware?

That's not a switch as in on or off, it's your fork lock.

I guess I should back up here before you call me a richard head. I was looking at the wrong thing. Then I noticed that the switch was showing that I think you meant. It's an auxiliary power switch. If you want to add something that you don't want to have power to all the time. My mistake.

I would like the best one available, not anything cheap and crappy.

Get a standard road king windshield, it will fit the best and not have extra space between the shield and nacelle. Make sure you also get the quick release hardware if you do not have the original windshield to take it from. Often you can buy assemblies on ebay (shields that have been in accidents)

I think the memphis shades have their own hardware available but they are not compatible with stock windshields or others that have the same hole dimensions as stock (like clearview windshields which I love).

There's probably no easy way to convert your bags over to a side lock other than getting new bags. Unless you want to change all the hardware and do fiberglass\paint.

Yes take out the headlight, remove the little nut that holds on the cover brace and then you should be able to figure out the rest. Have you been searching for a shop manual?

You should get that shop manual RKC mentioned, and hit a dealer and request a parts and accessories catalog (free) to see what's available windshield and bars wise, and 1000's of other do-dads for that ride. It's a Road King, any R K h-bar and windshield set will fit (but watch as some are year specific).

What you have is a X police Road King. The previous owner did his own thing with it to dress it up. If you do some searching you may find a windsheild but the police version is a bit taller than the regular Road King model, they are very easy to cut down if you find one. It is quick detach so most others will just clip onto your bike if there an HD model. The saddle bag pucks as they're affectionatly know can also be change to a pop-up style or a chrome cover OR? just start googling it. And those swicthes were for some axzillary cop bells and whistles that were removed so it could become a civillian model.
In a nut shell it's a Road King, Dress it your way.

Ride On

I had an '02 police version of the Road King with the the hockey puck tops converted to standard Road King. New lids and hardware are available from your dealer. It requires minimum work to drill out the fasteners, fill the holes, install the new hardware, and paint.

I recommend the standard Road King windshield hardware with the quick disconnect brackets, but select a shield height according to your preference. The quick disconnect is awesome for those days that you want to feel the wind!

I'm not a fan of wide bars, but they look great on some bikes. I had touring bars. You can't beat them for comfort and control.
