Broken tranny dipstick, yuck!
Ready to put my bike in storage, drain the tranny fluid and found the dipstick broke, WTF? The other half is properly sitting in the pan. What's the best way to do? I really don't want to pull the gear set, is it necessary to drop the pan for inspection? Thanks!

I have been running with a broken dipstick in my oil pan for a few years. The oil pick-up should have a screen on it which will keep the stick from clogging it.

There is no tranny "pan"...you will explode your trans in not time if you dont pull the trans side cover at a minimum. You might find it there.

The pan holds engine oil and is seperate from the transmission. The chrome cover on top might allow access to where the dipstick ended up. I'd try one of those extendable magnets through the fill hole or the inspection cover. Good luck!

Are you sure? 5 speed or 6 speed?
I don't think it dropped too far down, I have to suck all the fluid out to look.

Taking the side cover off is not that simple, the main and counter shafts have to come out with it. That's my last choice

The engine oil dipstick or the trans dipstick? I though you said trans.

With "pan" I was assuming engine oil dipstick...but yes the OP said tranny...
If it was the tranny, than just pull the side cover...

It is trans dipstick.
Look at this pic http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche....&b=17&Action=O
I think the trans shares engine oil pan, by looking at the picture, 2 passages go to different drain if I understand correctly.
If that is oil pan, the trans fluid goes through the pan and drain, the broken piece properly stays in trans. On the other hand, if the engine drain passage passes through the trans pan, I might be able to drop the pan to inspect. Know what I am saying? Thanks again!

Edited my response because it appears the 2007 dyna has the tranny dipstick in the trannny case, not on the side clutch release cover. If that is broken and dropped into the tranny, then you may be in trouble. Maybe you can get it by removing the top cover?

If not steel then what is it made of? I can't imagine it dropped down very far. Should be able to grab it with one of those flexible pickup tools.

I'd stick a telescoping magnet in fill hole.
