On a 05 Road King what is the shifting speed. And if I am crusing at 45 to 50 MPH what gear should I be in.

I'd be in 4th @ 45 & 5th @ 50 to be well above 2k rpm. But, I don't wind my bike out much. Don't see the point. I'm sure you'll get some, "a real biker would be in 3rd," responses.

I don't have a tach on my bike. I just shift based on the sound of the engine. It's pretty much 20+ mph for second gear, 30+ for third gear, 40+ for fourth and 50+ for fifth.

That sounds like a pretty fair estimation.

I don't have a tach either. I shift when it feels right. Those figures seem about right to me.

With my 07 EG 50 mph is only 2000 RPM in 5th gear which is lugging the engine.
Your 05 is probably geared lower so you may be ok with the above suggestions.

I also agree with MadCity and I have no tach. The key here is "cruising".

If I were accelerating to an interstate speed, I would still be in 4th gear (or 3rd).

If I were on a steep downhill slope, I might be in 4th to limit my momentum.

If I were on a steep uphill slope, I might be in 4th to keep from lugging.

If I were cruising on level ground, I'd be in 5th.

Feel it out. There is no "correct" answer.

DING, DING, DING!!!!

We have a winner!!!!

Never thought I'd say that about Gman.....JUST KIDDING!!!!

But he is right!
If you are riding easy, it is one way...but if you are riding hard,m it is another.

Up in the twisties, I keep my RPMS up above 3,500 or so, and down on the flattop I keep 'em down around 2,000. Just learn by your ear....If it sounds like it skips, go to a higher gear....if you want to be increasing speed, wind it out....if it sounds like it's whining go to a lower gear...you'll figger it out...

just remember to leave it in neutral when you shut 'er down, get off and walk away.
six seven yrs ago wife and i did a day ride with another couple, all good, stopped
at a bar and grill in the pm. we came back out, got on the bikes, i hit the starter and
my wg did a bit of a hop for us. hate when that happens.

only my second time tho.......

I dunno about leaving it in neutral. I always leave mine in 1st and pulling in the clutch lever is the fist thing I do when climbing on . . .

every ride is a bit different and most times very casual. wife
is diggin chit out of the bags, checkin her face in the mirror,
we're putting on some gear, i'm finishing a smoke and talking
with jim, rick, whoever is on the ride that day.

but you're right, i should focus on the basics more.
