They can be modified...I knew a guy who made bolt-in frame pieces to chop it and went 11 over on the front. When it was doen,it looked a lot like a conventional bike and ran really well!

I think it is more basic than most of the comments here. Whether you are an old-school Harley rider or not, the fact is that the VRod is currently a niche bike designed for short rides. Considering Harley sells a bunch of Touring bikes, I don't find the low VRod sales a surprise at all.
Personally, I would love to have a Vrod, but as a second bike... it could never replace my Road King.

Couldn't agree more. Also in the XR1200 chassis.

I agree. HD spent a lot of money developing a pretty good engine but it is a bit too high reving and gets poor mpg. Then they placed it in a bar hopping platform rather than a convertible or tourer. It's a wonder it even sells as well as it does IMO.

Whoops, sorry . . . . . BTW, I also ride, gasp, a Japanese bike as well as my roadglide. Better for local road bombing, RG better for road trips. Don't think I'd ever have a v-rod though, even though it has that marvelous motor. When I see a v-rod rider I always think there is something wrong with the riding position ergonomically for the size/look of the bike. Just looks wrong to me.

VRod Red Headed Step Child?
I take offense to this topic.
I happen to have a "thingy" for red-heads...
I think the Vrod engine was a good move for the moco, however as others said the looks and riding position is a "turn-off". I think a big mistake was having them just in silver the first year(s). The black ones made them not as "different" looking...

The stock riding position is bad on the V-Rod. I'm tall 6-2, I added the reach bars, and now ride in an upright position with the forward controls.

What about the XR 1200? Not sporty enough for you?

I think the engine was designed by PORCHE not HD. Water cooled does not seem to be a real HARLEY. It"s more of a foreign bike thing. The heat is part of the Harley charm & you figuring out how to cool it down...oil cooler ,engine wrap etc. Each his own.
