I put in cord style plug then trimmed it flush with the tread using a razor blade. I've since put about 4,500 miles on it since and there are no signs of the plug leaking or tearing out. The trick is to make sure you trim it flush or lower then the tread. If you just cut it off with a pair of side cutters leaving some of it about the tread you chance pulling the plug when the rear tire accelerated.

No bashing here. I got a screw in a 2 week old avon Venom Radial ($189 online plus 50 to install) I took it to my tire change guy and he plugged it, split the legs of the plug on the inside and patched the legs down and seal. He then balanced it and I rode it for a little over 9 thousand miles. I made sure to check pressure more often, but it didn't need any more air than any other tire.
If the plug is down right, it will ride.
