what does dealer prep entail?

Hi All,
I'm curious what is actually done for the "dealer prep" on a new bike? I don't think it was done on mine and want to be sure there are no safety issues - aside from the 9lbs of air that was in my front tire

Thanks,
Joe

Wow 9lbs that sounds like a real miss. From what my Indy tells me it is where the new mechanics get to practice. Oh and where you get to add a few hundred dollars to the already expensive purchase you are making :-)

they spray it down with a water based liquid and wipe it down. not the whole bike, just the places that have been touched, then add the 3to4 hundred bucks on the price. sometimes they check the tires and oil.

They have to uncrate them and assemble some parts like the windshield, handlebar adj,etc...not sure if they are shipped with fluids or not.

Step 1. Take cap off of pen
Step 2. Write $399.00 on the Sales Contract
Step 3. Wait for you to pay it and leave the dealership
Step 4. Call Pappa John's and order pizza for the dealership staff.
Step 5. Laugh their A$$es off while they're waiting for the pizza delivery guy.
Step 6. Eat the Pizza
Step 7. Burp...Fart...Repeat

They do come in a box. Someone has to put them together.

Here's an explanation of prep by one dealer. See bottom of this page. http://www.salemharley.com/service_request.asp

Regardless of how much or how little they do, it's not a cost that should be passed on to the customer. They've just been doing it for so long - and getting away with it - that it's generally accepted. Although, these days it's lot easier to bargin your way out of paying it.

9 lbs air in tire. That sounds like the dealer in my town.

My 04 Softail Standard had three oil leaks that were dripping on the ground.

When I buy a new bike or car, I stop the salesman when he tries to break down the price to me and tell me all the details on how it is structured. The only figure I want I tell him is the amount I need to write the check for to get the bike out of the dealership. I also ask him to include taxes, license, any transfer fees or anything else that might be included. (They seem to hate doing that). What I want to know is what the bike is really going to cost me. The rest is meaningless gibberish.

The setup fee is total BS. I didn't pay it on the only new bike I've ever owned. I just refused and kept walking out until I got what I wanted. The salesman was po'ed when it was all done.

I had researched the setup procedure and knew they didn't do much. It's just price gouging pure and simple. I probably will never buy another new bike. If I do though, I'll try everything to keep from paying it.
