I have put well over 100k on some of these bikes without any issue oil related issues.
I know what the manual says. It is a guideline of recommendations but you can use common sense also.
I also dont change the oil by the book. If i am on the road I dont have it changed, I like to do it myself. I have often been almost double what the book recommends. Hiway riding with little stop and go does not contaminate the oil like short bar hopping trips.
Again , use a little common sense.

Agree with everything here with expection to double what the book recommends. Personally, i think it's better to do the first oil change at 500 rather than 1000.

Ya, but I did it at 500, just the engine.
When I bought my 07, I was planning a trip to MT. I figured 5k miles would let me know if it was road worthy. 4500 miles and three weeks it was in the shop, cause it bucked, shaked, and pinged.
Lots of people roll the dice with less miles, and it is not the end of the world, just have to get it towed or sit in a motel while it is fixed.
Cell phone mechanics should realize, MT is not the place for them.

Montana Ride
I say change the oil out early and get your ass out on the roads. the Beartooth pass from Red Lodge to Cooke City or visa versa will give you a little to talk about. I ride all over this great state. Roads are good in the east but great riding all over. Not much Interstate and for the most part just stay off it. They don't call it "Big Sky Country" for nothing...goldie

Does anyone know if the MoCo uses any additives in the factory fill oil? A lot of car companies do, and draining it early is no necessarily a good thing.

If you haven't already left yet, I'd get close to the 1000 and then use some AMSOil in it. If not AMSOil maybe the Harley Syn1 but I'm now a believer in the AMSOil for my 3 bikes.
Ride safe & have fun!

I meant there are places with no cell coverage. You got guys who say I don't need tools, I got a cell phone, but they don't realize there are lots of places in this country that don't have cell coverage.

Nope...decided to hold off on the Montana trip until next year....I've got nearly 1000 miles on it now so it's getting close to time to change it anyway.
Thanks (everyone) for all the suggestions!!!

IMHO, and I don't know much, after the first 1000 miles you could do a round trip on syn oil without changing. And make sure your insurance package includes towing. More importantly, you might have an easier safer trip in late spring, if you get my drift. Get it? Drift.

With respect, I'd be more concerned about freezing to death this time of year. You were wise to put it off.

EXCUSE ME, Dan.... I was posting an update from my ankle replacement surgery on Friday, then deleted the post as I stated in my last post here to put it in "off-topic".
Too much caffeine today???
