103 upgrade?

newbie wondering if 103 upgrade is worth what dealer is chargeing? $1699 which will actually be $1400 when they reimberse winter storage fee of $299. upgrade includes pistons, cylinders, high performance clutch spring, air cleaner and 255 cam w/se bearings. Presently the bike has se tuner, reinhart true duels, stage 1 air cleaner. Stock 96 otherwise. what should I expect to gain HP, torque from this upgrade? Thanks for any info on this ?

You will gain a modest amount of HP probably around 90hp total and big early bump in torque somewhere north of 100 ft lbs. It will be a VERY noticable difference, much better with some pipes... I could think of better cams.. Andrews 54 comes to mind right away. Can you get 'em to do it with the Andrews cam?

I made the upgrade in the Winter of '09. I went with the "ThunderMax" Autotuner and a K&N instead of the Harley Stage One filter (have not heard a lot of good about the HD air filter). The other thing I did, which the tech at the shop laughed at until he saw the dyno numbers, was to polish the throat of the intake (took a lot of sweat equity). The rest of the build was an out of the box HD 103 upgrade. This past Fall I installed the Cobra Tri-ovals. The bottom line is that I am nearly at 100HPX100FtLbs and plan no other upgrades. The price the Stealer quotes you is about what I paid at a local shop specializing in HD's. Hope this helps.

Sounds like a good deal to me. You will appreciate the extra torque.

Seems like a deal to me, I am in my stage II 103 kit quite a bit more than that but I bought exhaust and a tuner when the work was done as well as the bike being dyno tuned at the same time. 92 hp and 106 tq for me.

It is a good deal, but for your best performance you should think about dumping those pipes and getting a good tuned two into one like a Vance and Hines Pro pipe.

Those true duel just kill your power curve.

In a word, yes.

I went from a stock 96inch motor to a stock 103inch motor when I bought my latest FLHRC. I did exchange the stock pipes on my 2011 for reinhart true duals, and replaced the stock air cleaner with an Arlen Ness aftermarket cleaner. Of course, the entire motor needed to be retuned. The gain was approximately 14% over my 2007.

You will definitely notice a difference.

I did the 103 upgrade on my 09 road glide, it is worth the money, I would recommend looking into decompression valves, I had my share of kick backs and had them installed later at much cost..

Sprang for a $3500 redo on the 2011 Deluxe. This thing is now a 102-HP rear wheel beast, with dyno to back it up.
Worth it? Hell yeah!
Have a 103 2010 RK Police that is far superior to the 96 too. Gonna hot rod this one too.
Go for it.
Per the comment above.
You MUST have compression release values to avoid hot start headaches. have automatic on the RK Police and manual on Deluxe. Spring for the automatic (about $350)

You can have your heads machined for the Electronic Compression Releases just like the CVO and Police and new Ultra Limited. Two hours labor for machine work and about $100 in parts. Just got my heads done at Appelton HD they will go good with my 107 kit from GMR Performance, BigBoyz Heads, 54 cams and Hobanized crank.
