Used Harley prices: Kelly Blue Book or NADA?

Why is there such a huge difference in prices of used Harleys when you compare the Kelly Blue Book value with the NADA guide value?

For example, a 1998 Fat Boy is valued at $10,690 in KBB, versus $7,440 in NADA.

In another example, a 2002 Wide Glide is valued at $11,000 in KBB, versus $8,835 in NADA.

I could see a difference of a few hundred bucks, but we're talking differences of $2,000-$3,000 so what gives?

With the recession, high unemployment and all that, I hear that it is a buyer's market for used hogs, yet most of the bikes for sale seem to have asking prices closer to KBB, whether it's a dealer or private seller.

I can understand a dealer hoping for the higher KBB value, since they at least offer some warranty on a used bike, but wouldn't a bike being sold by a private seller be expected to fetch a lower price, mainly because you are buying the bike with no warranty?

With such a huge difference between KBB and NADA, how do I know what's a good deal out there? How do I know how much to offer on a used bike?

Ken

I'm talking about selling (retail) price, not trade-in price.

KBB retail value is a great starting point. You might have to adjust the price for the economy.

I do know, when I bought my 01 in 03, the credit union would only finance what the NADA valued the bike at. I had to pay $200 cash.

I believe that KBB states that the "retail" is from a dealer, and is normally higher for the reasons you stated. Either KBB, Edmunds, or NADA, states a private seller retail price as well.

I thought they listed both, private and trade in prices.

A dealer I was trying to trade with quoted me the Black Book price and said that the KBB and NADA were not what dealers used, well duh! It was several thousand lower than the other books. - Link to this site to see the Black Book value -

You don't need the VIN just the make and model but the VIN also works -

Can't answer the OP's question but i've often wondered the same thing myself. How often do they update their values? And, why such differences in values? The fact that the dealer uses a different guide just complicates things more. I think the Black book leans more toward wholesale values, which is what the dealers want to offer.

If there is a spread between the two, I get a good average. Then factor in your location, the market, and selling prices of others. Works good for me.

funny, I was at the dealer the other day, and he whipped out a NADA out of his back pocket!

I'm a dealer (used) here in Ca. and purchase quite a few Harleys. Today more than ever..a bikes value is worth what someone is willing to pay. The books are a bit of a guide, but most bikes here are selling well below wholesale.

KBBk is used for a guide to loan with banks and LTV (loan to value) % down.
NADA is off the auction pass thru average. Book is for loaning and is not the value. Supply and Demand is the value. Book is a guide for getting a loan or pulse. Auction Wholesale---what the dealer gets em for is around NADA book--- KBBk is pretty much a standard used for loaning on the motor vehicle. (another animal all together)

Again most banks do not add for miles to the value (however it is a value to the Consumer) Chrome goodies are not an add rather a plus for resale (if done right?)
Can go either way---like a lowered vehicle is a deduct to Dealer to a Consumer it could be the thing but too the right person. Not to mention Liability of resale of a non safety vehicle (pending on your location)

10years financing used cars and sometimes a few bikes back in the day... Source.
