HD considering building new plant in Ky.
Just heard on news this morning that Harley is considering building a new plant in Shelbyville, Ky. Moving one from somewhere up North. C. Ky has become a automotive plant state. So now maybe a motorcycle state ..... Sounds good to me ! I develop integration software for automated welding lines now, and this new plant is only 35 miles away and 15 miles shorter than current work site drive. I'll try and keep up with news and post.

Kinda old news. Last I heard, they are still considering options in KY, Indiana and Tenn. Then again, they just might stay in York, PA.

Actually it is not old news. They have ruled out the other locations so if the Touring/Softail plant does move, it will be moving to Kentucky.

Bottom line guys it's all about the union contract. If the union makes the concessions they want, it will probably stay in York. If not, they may move. I live 20 miles from the York plant. If you live in KY this is a good thing, if you are now working in York, it flat sucks.

As right to work states go Ky. is closer to HD's northern operations and headquarters. We have had good success taking care of major automotive concerns, Toyota Plant is one of the big T's Flagship facilities. I am conflicted about the union thing, we lost our last union mine in the county years ago. The miners even though they still enjoy all the benifits the Union miners got them can be heard making anti union statements. The State of Ky. will make all the concessions necessary to get that plant, taxing and otherwise. I guess in country outsourcing is better than taking production out of the country.
If they make the big move I hope the York employee's get some panel rights and get the opportunity to transfer. Beautiful country down there, Bluegrass portion of the state. Good roads, good schools K through University Level. Will welcome all that come down as long as they are UK fans....

True but the last bill I looked at in 2006 makes it impossible to fire someone for not joining the union or makes it tough to hire Union only option. You can't enforce or impose union closed shop agreements under current law.

You are correct Coupe, however non-union people still pay an "agency fee" equal to Union dues in represented work places. I don't want to ruffle any feathers here, just corrected you on the "Right to work" status of Kentucky.

No offense taken as you are technically more correct, that is how they can allow a so called weaker union also they can manipulate and keep the one's they don't want out.

I don't think this thread is about the pros and cons of a Union. Maybe the R&P forum is a better place for that.
I agree about York. It would be a shame to move the HD facility out of there. It would equate to moving out of Milwaukee. I hope they stay put.

The Union comment is directly related to this thread. The reason why HD wants to move the factory is to break the Union. They are seeking a state that doesn't have Union Employees.

And which state would that be? I can't think of one that doesn't have union employees, especially Kentucky.
