as bike with sidecar and 2 riders would be a definite advantage.

As I read the rules, a bike with a sidecar or trike is only allowed if the rider has a disability. A passenger is only allowed to accompany the rider if the disability requires that. I don't believe that allows them to share the riding responsibilities. It does not sound like they would have much of an advantage to me. Increased gas stops, decreased handling, twice the chance of a problem, not to mention the rider is disabled in some way, etc...
I tend to doubt it is "fixed". It would be a pretty elaborate scheme considering they are fitting every bike/rider with a chip to record times as well as GPS. The rules are pretty strict and no one associated with the event can win the money even if they place first.
It is a charity ride put together by vets, I certainly hope they are not out to swindle the average guy trying to win. Not to mention that the entire thing is being done for a show and there will be camera crews, corporate sponsors, advertising dollars and likely a profit margin to support the entire event.
With a $1000 entry fee and 1000 riders that is 1 million dollars just to start the event off. I am not so sure they could cover the entire event with the 500,000 that isn't prize money and still donate to charity so there is certainly more money behind it somewhere.
They also postponed it once from Aug 2009 because of the financial issues for many of the participants. They did this to allow everyone that wants to participates the time to regroup and get everything in order.
I wonder if we could get a VTF sponsored entry and send one lucky ( ) individual for the big show?

if VTF wants to sponser me, I would be up for the challenge, just need a few things for the ride, $1000 for a start.

I don't know if the VTF could officially sponsor a rider but an unofficial donation based sponsorship could certainly work.
I would support a "contest" of sorts to pick a rider. First we would need a few entrants with a genuine interest and ability to actually ride in the event. Someone that can get the time off and has the resources to fund their own trip (gas, food etc.). Each would have to write a brief essay explaining why they should be picked and offering their genuine interest in riding the event. Then we could put together a poll with each essay and entrant and let the members of the VTF pick the one they think would best fit the bill.
If we could get to the point of actually picking someone to do the ride, I would be the first to donate $100 toward the entry fee. After reaching a total of $1000, the person picked would be able to send in an application and we would pay the entry fee. Any additional donations exceeding the $1000 mark would be donated to help support the ride, Gas, Food etc.
If by chance the VTF rider should win the $500,000 it would be nice for that person to remember the ones that sent him on the ride but that is completely optional.
If there is any genuine interest in this, I will work out the details and make it happen (dependant on actual donations). So speak up !!!!!!!

100 people X $10. Very doable. I'm in for $10!!! Extras would pay the riders expenses. There has to be 100 people plus here with $10 they can spare.
Someone would have to ride.....

why not make the contest here so that everyone entering would pony up some cash, then the winner of the VTF contest goes. 20 entries @ $5 each? maybe even keep track of who finishes behind the winner in case they can't make it.

Not sure I follow. 20 x $5 = $100, entry is $1000... Plus I am not so sure we could even get 20 people with a sincere entry to actually go on such a ride. It is 7000 miles in 14 days. If we could get 5 sincere and genuinely interested applicants I would consider that a huge success.
Post up if you really think you can do it !!!

Forget the whole thing.
I see post after post by people who ride $20,000 + motorcycles, have signatures that tell all about their expensive mods and dyno times, and then they go on to say they can't afford to become a paid member on this forum.
You think they are going to donate money for someone else to ride? Never.

I wouldn't be so sure ... I have already offered up 1/10 of the total entry fee. It really would not take much to hit the target and I bet I know at least a couple more that would donate. There are a lot of members here.

The money part is one thing, what would be as, if not more, valuable would be the network of support the VTF could offer as the rider made his way accross the country.

Ah my math was way off. that many miles in that many days is very doable. doing it very fast is the question about winning. I rode 6000 miles in 13 days and didn't ride two of the days more than 100 miles. no I didn't pay for a membership, I just don't get to see the pics and such.
20 people at $50 per or 50 people at $20 per. better math eh
