my 08 Road King 103" is much louder then my 08 Dyna 96". Can it be the difference in compression that is causing it? Seems strange as it comes and goes depending on RPM. Both have windshields on them. Take the windshields off and I still hear the ticking on the King.

Noise
I have a Ultra Limited with 1500 miles, Did what manual said for break in. Did 1000 mile service. Still here clicking but not as much, or just not worring about it. If it were to get louder i'd take it in to have it looked at. I had a 09 SG and I did here it also. I don't believe it's anything to worry about..

Check for a time bomb somewhere on the bike.

Same here, 1200 miles! Two hundred past the 1000 and the ticking/clicking is not as loud. I put Redline in the trans and I believe I am getting a lot of noise bounced back off the fairing. At any rate, it still runs so who knows!

I just bought a '10 Ultra Limited, got 1000 miles on it now. It doesn't seem noisy to me. I hear some ticking noise, but my '06 Road King sounded the same to me. I don't worry about it. All of the Harleys I have owned made some noise. Your rear end is right on top of an engine, you are gonna hear it. Ever take the engine cover (dogbox) out of a van and drove it down the road? I did this as an auto tech sometimes and you wouldn't believe how freakin' loud that engine is at 50 mph. Don't worry about it, it's fine. Ride the S.O.B. Jr.

Good answer every Harley makes noise. It runs great with good torque, Any Limited owners changed the exhaust or added slip ons

time to bring this excellent information back up
http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm
I hate when I do that and get caught in a up in an old thread like it is new, and I was already here
I so dum, might want to rethink that cool status boys.
How is that post deleting option coming along?

Funny enough, I was just at the dealer today asking a question on my bike (different issue), and one of the tech's was talking to another guy. He described exactly the problem your having, and blamed it on the emission standards that HD has to meet. Bikes are running to lean, and getting too hot with the catalytic converters.
According to him best thing is to rip that catalytic off, do a stage 1 upgrade and dyno the bike.
