Where I live in California they have pretty much done away with individual hoses except for gas or diesel. I for one am not happy about having to pay $4.79 a gallon for 91 octane knowing that the first pint or so is much cheaper regular gas. So what I do is when I'm on a group ride, I let all the other riders that are in a hurry to gas up, gas up first. That way I know I'm not getting regular and I am only filling my tank with the 91. But when I'm riding by myself I get whatever the last person put in for my first pint, and that sucks.

$4.79 a gallon? Dang... I just filled up with Premium Sunday @4.03 a gallon. Sort of feel lucky now.

The sad thing is I live right across the bay from the Chevron Oil refinery, so it's not like they have to truck it all that far. If you live in the San Francisco bay area you get hosed.

Not trying to rub salt in any wounds but 92 octane is currently $3.59/9 here in York, PA and it has been dropping. Diesel is at $4.39/9. Which is better than it was, but I still ride the bike more than I drive my truck.

I haven't filled my bike up in a few weeks so that's the old price. I just went online and Googled bay area prices and the lowest non-mystery gas in my area is $4.29 for Shell. The sad part is 91 is the highest I can get where I live.

I called a gas pump parts manufacturer. I talked to a tech on how much gas is left in the hoses. It all depends on hose length and weather it is a vapor return hose. I asked to calculate an 8 ft. vapor return hose which would be a common or average hose. He came up with 13 oz of fuel would be left in the line. (just under a pint). If there is a 12 ft. hose then there will be about 16 oz.
So there you have it!!!

Then there's guys like me who can run mid-grade(or even maybe low, haven't tried it yet) so I get some free high-grade if the guy before me pumped that!
Right now, mid-grade is around $3.70 here last I checked. Everything seems to be going down everyday. There's one stop that charges $.04 less if you pay with cash.

Pump was accurate. I confess, my tank was empty and so was my wallet. Your unattended pump was too much to resist.
Thanks,

I wonder how many squeeze the pump handle after shutting off the pump. I may be a tight wad but I do it every time I fill up.
I push up on the lever that shuts the pump off when you place the handle back into position. Then I give the handle a squeeze to get every last drop from the hose into my tank.
I'll be darned it I give my premium fuel to the person behind me waiting to fill up his hybrid.

They hadn't locked their hoses up and I was able to get just enough fuel to make it about 2 mi to the next station.

Thought a gallon was 128 oz not 124 oz not a a big delta, 2/10 * 128 = 25.6 oz which is close to 32 oz which is a quart. I think it would depend on the pump and hose configuration. Where I live most whoses come from above and are higher then the tank. I would think gravity would force the gas down. Older style pumps where the whose would run below your tank would hold gas in them ?? Just a thought.
thanks

You are right, 128, not 124. If you have vapor recovery systems, they can be set to take some fuel before the shutoff. there is also a vacuum seal and you would have to move the hose around to get all of the fuel left to drain. That fuel is yours, if someone left his fuel in the line, I guess that is yours also. give the hose a shake and pull up all the hose above the handle to get it to drain.
