Trade in Value
I currently have an 08 XL1200R and I'm thinking about trading it in for an 09 FXDC dyna super glide custom. I think that bike is beautiful. What trade in value do you think I will get for my bike? It has 650 mi. Only got it about 3-4 months ago still in mint condition. Paid 10,500 out the door. Only difference is it now has Vance and Hines straight shots slip ons. Any opinions welcome. Thanks.

I think you might be very surprised to find they offer lower than 7K and it might be as low as 5K. remember they make quite a few dollars when they sell it to you and won't give you more than they paid for the bike. The after market pipes you could take off and sell separate because they won't give you more due to the pipes being on it.
Really the best option is to sell it yourself.

My guess (and that is all it is!) is $8,000, and they'll tag it for $9,100 or thereabouts.
Let us know what you do and what it goes for. Since it ain't even broke in yet, I imagine it wouldn't be too tough for you to sell it yourself, and save a grand or more.

Kelly bluebook says the trade in value is $5930, and that means you're going to loose a lot of money trading your bike. Try selling it yourself. Retail value is $8125 for your bike.

from kelley blue book...
The Kelley Blue Book Suggested Retail Value is representative of dealers' asking prices and is the starting point for negotiation between a consumer and a dealer. This Suggested Retail Value assumes that the unit has been fully reconditioned and is in excellent condition. Mileage/condition and additional equipment may have a substantial impact on the value shown above. This value also takes into account the dealers' profit, costs for advertising, sales commissions and other costs of doing business. The final sale price will likely be less depending on the unit's actual condition, popularity, type of warranty offered and local market conditions.
it is a dealer asking price...dealers generally get more for vehicles because they warranty them and have an obligation to stand behind what they sell...in addition they have expenses an outright seller does not...thats not to say the right person at the right time wont pay a private seller that amount but it may be a longshot...
your best bet is to take it to the dealer and find out what they will give you...regardless of what you paid it is a used bike now and will not command them the same kind of money you paid when they sell it...they are entitled to a profit...but...if they see it as a bike they may be able to sell more readily than the big bore i am assuming you are going to take off their floor (preferably another 08)...they may just surprize you....
it never hurts to try...walk away with a friendly comment that you expected more and dont turn around...you might have a message on your answering machine when you get home with a different figure on it...they are going to test you before anything....test them...theyre just doing their job...be better at it than them and you could come out a winner...

If you go to the same dealer that you bopught the sportster from and ask about upgrading, he just might give you a better deal, you will never know until you try.
A Sportster is not a wimp's bike or a girl's bike, but they are a different bike than a big twin. It sure seems that a lot of people buy a Sportster because they want a HD and then sell it soon to trade up. My advice is to rent a couple of bikes and drive them just to see if that is what you want. wouldn't it be screwed up if you decided that you liked the Sportster better?

If you're going to do the trade-in, may I suggest wearing the half chaps? The kind of ass rapin you'll be takin might be easier to weather without all the additional leather in the way.
