Jumping battery from bike to bike

Anything wrong about jumping batteries from bike to bike? The computer? Electrical System? Can either bike be damaged?

I stopped to help some guys broke down this past weekend. One of the bikes just quit when going down the road. Battery was dead. They jumped from another bike (not running) and its battery went instantly dead? We were able to get it running again by jumping it from a another running bike. Had to get another battery for the first bike that went down. Just made me start thinking, just how safe is it to jump batteries?
