Synthetic Oil and Filter question?
So I'e been doing tons of reading/research on previous posts and articles regarding oil choice. My '02 FXDX has about 6,000 miles, and I'm switching to a synthetic i have decided on. I am not starting this thread for a debate.....I just need help....and all would be appreciated. A couple of quick questions:
1. Do I need to do anything special to try to flush out all of my old stock oil from the engne, or will it be ok to just do a regular drain to the old oil and add 3.5 quarts of the new synthetic?
2. Also, I have read lots of discussion and comparisons of various oils, but I have found nothing on comparing oil filters. I would appreciate some opinions or links re: oil filter choice??!!
Much Thanks...

1. No, most synthetics will mix well with regular oil (at least Amsoil does). If you are changing at normal drain intervals, having a tiny amount of old dino shouldn't hurt. Just do a normal oil change.
2. Since I order oil from Amsoil, I order their filters. I don't really need to, but I've done a lot of reading and trust their products. Also, it depends if you are going to do extended drain intervals or normal changes. I go with synthetic, but change at normal intervals.

I use Amsiol 20-50 and their filters. Read near the bottom of the article to see what they recommend for changing the filter.

i can't help but laugh everytime there's a question about oil. Makes you wonder if we should have an oil forum added.

I run amsoil and thier filters. I change oil once a year and the filter twice a year. After I first change to syn oil I do the first change at 2500 just to get the old oil mixture out, then its once a year after that.

Have heard older engines broke in with dino oil will develop leaks when changing over to synthetics. Syn oil causes the old oil build up to break down and turn into sludge... all I need is a big bugar of sludge floating around in my engine.. Just what I've heard..

Thanks for the replies guys! So question 1 is adequately answered.
How about question 2: Between all of the threads on this site debating oil, there is little to nothing discussing filters??!! Anyone running other oil filters besides AMSOIL filters?
ps- And thanks for the comical "another oil thread" replies....I new those were inevitable!

Those amsoil filters are smooth all over, no ripple around the bottom. Not going to overtighten them unless you resort to tightening with a wrench.

I couldn't find specs on the Amsoil filters. Are they the 10 micron kind required on the TC88s?

So, I ended up going with AMSOIL all around (for filters, engine, primary and tranny). Thanks for the help folks!

Back to my above question.... I couldn't find the info at the Amsoil site....does anyone know if the Amsoil filters meet the 10 micron spec of the H-D Super Premium filters for the TC88s? If so, which Amsoil filter for an '03 Dyna Glide? The PDF chart at their site only goes through the '01 Dynas. Thanks.

Trooper, I have an '02 FXDX and there is no issue with mine, I would imagine yours would be the same. I'm pretty sure AMSOIL's filter would at least meet the 10 micron spec. I'm not sure of the ordering number....I just told the rep that I ordered the stuff through which bike I had and he's sending me the appropriate filter.....I can tell you when I get it next week. I would reccomend using him if you're looking for an AMSOIL distributer......he's on this site and his name is George Douglas. I spent some time chatting with him last night on the phone and he seems to be a good guy. You get your AMSOIL products delivered to your door at wholesale cost and 10% of his sales goes back to this site. His email is george@oilhelp.com. He would certainly be able to answer all of your questions re: specs! Good luck...
