Cold weather riding
I was just wondering if many people ride when the temp is below 20*F ? If so, what do you use for face protection? I have been riding to work and it's been anywhere from 9*F to 20*F at 5AM in the mornings. I got a full face helmet, but the shield will freeze in ice on the inside, making it nessary to lift it up to see. I have tried anti-fog stuff, but dosen't help. Other than this problem, I have the rest figured out for a 25 mile ride. Looking for suggestions.

Have you tried any of the anti fogging products that are available for your helmet face visor?

I tried a antifog product called "sea-ice" that is supposed to keep it from fogging up, and it did help but visor still froze up after a couple of miles. I'm not really familiar with snowmobile stuff as I live in NC, but I will look on the net. Thanks.

I went with a 3/4 helmet this year. Does not fog up as bad as the full face. Went thru the anti-fog stuff and shaving cream (although the shaving cream does work well when it's above 25). Up until this winter I would wear a toboggan, heavy weight baclava and neoprene face mask. The only cold spot was around the nose. But you live in a helmet state so that does not really matter. The 3/4 helmet I bought , the face shield is farther away from the face. It still fogs up but as I said not as bad. When I ride at highway speeds I can keep it flipped all the way down. When I am in stop and go traffic, I have the shield flipped so it just covers my eyes.

I have an electra glide,I drilled a few 1/4 inch holes in mine , combined with the windshield it lets in just a little air , just enough to keep it from fogging.Since its not blowing straight in my face stays warm.
I wouldn't have tried it without windshield protection.
1st year for a full face , always toboggans , scarfs , face covers and on and on and on,,
Should have had one years ago,no substitute for a warm head.

Its great you can ride when it gets that cold. I have heated Clothing from Gerbings which keeps me warm but when it gets below freezing around here I am more afraid of hitting black ice. For your face shield I use one of these and it works great. Its a film that is stuck to the inside of your face shield. Once its installed it on for good. Only down side is at night you get some light reflections from cars behind you..

try a pinlock
This is the only thing I've found that really works. Got the idea from someone on this forum.

Thanks for all the advise, I got some new ideas. Never heard of pinlock but going to check it out, and E- Springer never heard of putting shaving cream on a visor but I'll give it a try. Hope this is not a joke Anyway, maybe I can get something to work or better yet, it will warm up!

A 25 mile ride in 15 degree weather???????? I think I'd either buy a car or make a helmet out of a woodstove. That's freaking COOOOOLD!!!!!! Hat's off to you if you do this daily.

Try the Army Surplus store. Get, what I would call, a
SWAT type head/face mask. Basically a tight fitting, black
(possibly green also), head and face covering that you can
pull down below your mouth or cover up to your nose. Like
I said, just picture what you would see a swat team officer
wear when he doesnt want to show his face.
Not a balaclava, which I also wear over the other when
its super cold.
Dont know what to call it....hope this helps.

I'd be more concerned about the black ice issues too. I'm already seeing the moisture coming up through the road surfaces. Black ice isn't far behind.

Get a "Zube Tube", it work's quite well & is able to be folded into many forms for different needs. Doesn't cost much.
