Burnouts?

Can someone explain burnouts to me? I just cant grasp why someone would want to ruin a $150.00 to $200.00 tire in about 20 - 30 seconds. Am I missing something here? Please enlighten me.

There FUN! :p I will do them when the tire is due for replacement. Holding back the bike and letting off the front brake, the take off is the best. 60+ foot burn outs!!!!

They don't make sense, but neither does paying close to $20,000 for a motorcycle

In your 20s you're trying to impress the women
In your 40s you're entertaining the kids

I little unrelated to this thread, but it reminded me of something.

We were at the All Harley Drag Racing Finals in Vegas, watching the street class. (passing time until the top fuelers).

The racers would come up to the line and burnout like crazy to heat the tires and to look good. Then along comes this guy with a rigid shovel, and a raked front end(don't get me wrong, it's a well done bike). He pushes his bike up to the start line and just sits on it. His opponent speeds up and does a massive burn out. The guy on the shovel just sits and watches him. After the burnout guy advances to the start line, the shovel guy gives his bike one kick and it starts. The lights go and he is GOOOOOOOOONE. He blew the doors off of everyone in his class to capture the title. That is COOL.

To give credit where credit is due, here is his picture.

Attended a Harley siminar at Bike Week where one of the factory guys told a story about burnouts. He had been to Hooters during Bike Week the year before and witnessed some parking lot burnouts. He had a chance to jot down the serial numbers of the contestants. When he returned to Milwaukee he monitored their computer system to see warranty claims come in on the same serial numbers.

Bike week story. A guy rides a honda to the burn out pit and promptly smokes the tire until shredded/explodes. Then he gets off and walks away. Someone yells out for him to move the bike and he turns back and yells "It aint mine". True story.

I'm with you. Rolling 3 gear shots are fun as HELL. The feel of that power gives me a woody. 15,000miles and I'm putting my third tire on. And you get much more than a 20 or 30 second burn time. Although it does depend on how hard your tire is. I don't sit still when I burn. Rolling shots fer me. Anyone can hold the brake or bump a wall and burn.

Ways to pull shots. First borrow someone else’s bike or take 1 for a test ride. Start on flat ground with yer feet planted. It will depend on how big yer hand is as to the way you are going to hold the front brake and still be able to roll on the throttle. I use 2 fingers (thumb and pointer) to throttle and the other three hold the brake. Find the friction zone with yer clutch. Hold front brake, roll on the gas a little and start to entire the friction zone with the clutch. When you feel the bike wanting to start to move, slowly give it more gas as yer letting the clutch out slow to start. After you are comfy with it you will be able to crack that ***** and make much smoke without a second thought. I would start off on a burn board (2 x 8 x 10’). It’s a lot easier on the tire and easier to get the wheel to spin freely. Now after you master that. 2 or 3 tires later, you then start to shift into second and so on. DO NOT tilt the bike to shift gears or it will grab and you might go down. In order to shift you need to rev it up and shift real fast so the hot tire does not have time to slow down and catch. Now for rolling shots (real hole shots), you need to always remember that the back end follows the front. Where the front points you go. When you fish tail DO NOT try to correct this or let off the throttle quickly. If you let the throttle go when your ride is fish tailing it can jump almost side ways and made for a real bad day. Keep pointing straight and roll off gas. If you start off in first, you can start from a stand still or rolling. If yer ride has much power, then a second gear rip will give ya more rolling rubber. Again start with ONLY a first gear rolling shot before you try to advance and shift gears. You need to many many shots before you will know what your ride will do in different situations. I lay on my tank and crack the bitchh wide open until I hear her peak, then slam second (some times with clutch and some times not) and if you have it rolling good catch third. BIG ASS FUN that’s why. When I ride my metrics I will feather the brake and ride a shot all fuken day. Can make a cool smilly face and have even written my name in the parking lot. I take every thing I have evr owned to the max. If it will do 200mph I’m doing it. Start slow and smart and be safe.
