how many miles is to many?

on another fourm there was a thread about buying a new bike vrs a used bike. one member said he looked at a used 06 with something like 16,000 miles. he said that was to many miles on an 06 for his liking. well i guess my 06 is worn out cause i nave 21,000 miles on mine. i may be wrong but i bought mine to ride and not set. what does everyone think? i can't see spending that much money for something to look at and not ride. i have a 06 flstc/i.

Ictinike wants to know where he is and how he got here
Personally I'd trust a high miles more depending.

High miles don't mean a lot on a bike. A guy that rides a lot of miles means a lot though. Means they like it, they prolly take care of it. Probably read a lot, learned a lot, know a lot.

I've seen high mile engines torn down that looked a hell of a lot better than low miles ones. I'd take one of them.

Buying a bike is a lot more about checking out the owner than checking out the bike...

Well I guess he wont be buying my 2006 Ultra.... I got 38,000 miles on mine. I decided to keep this one for another 3 years. I suspect I will have near 90,000 on it by then.... Wonder what I will get for it?

A couple of years ago, while I was on an extended cross country trip (Gold Wing), I visited a Philadelphia area HD dealer that I had frequented when I lived in Pennsylvania. Conversation with the sales manager centered around trade in bikes and their recorded mileage. I mentioned the high mileage trades we see in Tucson: 15-20K per year on Touring bikes and he told me he would have a hard time selling a Harley with that high mileage to a local customer. According to him, HD owners in HIS area looking for a used bike will avoid a bike without very low mileage.

Of course in Sunny, hot, windy, dusty, barren Arizona, where we ride nearly all year, one must travel about 300 miles just to get anywhere.

The price will have to reflect the miles if you want to sell it. When I sold my 2003 Ultra with 40K on it. There were other Ultra's out there same year with 4K on them. I had to low ball the price to sell it. The bike was in great condition and the guy got a good deal on the bike. I have sold several high mileage bikes (goldwings) and had a problem selling those to without dropping the price. There are just too many low mileage bikes out there to compete with.

Milage quantity doesnt matter as much as milage quality.

A bike thats done 50,000 miles long interstate trips is going to be in better health than one reading 15,000 miles thats been used daily in short city commutes or ridden like a racebike. Cold running, stop go use, exposure to all weathers, are all factors which can result in higher wear of the bike overall.

There are SO MANY used Harleys to choose from. For whatever reason, guys buy them new, and turn them after a short while. Amazing deals to be had on bikes with less than 5,000 miles. That's how I bought both of mine.

Having said that, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a well maintained Harley with 15,000-20,000 miles. Only thing is, the more miles the more important it is to know the owner and how they cared for it.

I recently tried to sell my 2004 FXST with 34,000 on it. No takers. Not even a nibble. Too many used bikes on the market right now. All of them have low miles. I've been seeing 02's and 03's with 2,000 or 3,000 miles on them. I have a friend with a 02 Fatboy and he only has 2,500 miles on it. I think a lot of people bought them as status symbols or because they thought it was cool to say they owned a HD.

Some people ride, and some do not. An old boss of mine has an 02' Fatboy. It has just under 5000 miles on it! He rides around town occasionally and the bike basically just sits in his garage. I asked him how many services his bike has went through, he said one.

To look at the bike from a distance, it looks Ok. But up close it looks brand spankin new. He was telling me (last summer) that he wanted to trade it in, of course I said why? You don't ride enough, but to each his own. To my knowledge he hasn't traded it.

I have a 2004 RK Custom, all kinds of goodies. Can't even get anyone one to look at it. 4000 miles on 95 bb with 6/speed trans, crusie control all linds of chrome. It's a shame, sweet ride. Who would of thought the market would drop out on nice used bikes.

16k miles is nothing, but all things being equal, buyers are going to choose the bike with low mileage. There are so many nice low mileage bikes available now that it doesn't make sense to pay top dollar for one with high mileage. Case in point: I picked up a 2000 model Sportster recently with only 15k miles and it still looks brand new.

I'm often amazed that in our shop the bikes with high miles generally sell much faster then bikes with low miles. Could be because the newer low mileage bikes (often commission sales) are priced to high. The shop owner stands behinds the bikes he knows and maintains, so guys that cant afford a $15000 bike are willing to buy one with high miles because they trust him, especially if he built the engine.

Generally doesn't take a lot of taking with a bike owner to find out if he took care of his bike or road the sh.. out of it with little to no preventive maintenance.
