Could someone tell me what the difference between a sert and a power comander is. And is one better than the other?
Thanks

The SERT allows you to change the ECM program directly. The Power Commander is an add on electronic piece that plugs in between the ECM and the wiring harness. The PC then intercepts the signals from all the sensors and then tells the ECM what it wants it to know in order to control the ECM. The PC is less configurable and adds another electronic device to the bike that could breakdown.
Some like the PC better but I prefer the SERT.

If that is true, and I would expect more from a TEXAN, then SERT is not from you; OTOH, you may just be so I will leave other to deal with you
Springer, what happens if you crash your laptop with the SERT software on it? Can you re-stall on another computer? Can anyone's software connect and read other bikes as well or is it a bit like Microsoft? How does the dealer read all bikes, guess they have a universal type program? Thanks, John

The software comes on a CD and can be installed on any number of computers. In order for it to communicate with your bike there is an adapter. The first time the communications adapter "talks" to your bike it registers the VIN number and then only works with that ECM. But the software will work with other bikes as long as it has its own communication adapter registered to its VIN number.
The Dealers use a tool called a "Digital Tech" it can communicate with all ECM's and can program the VIN number in the ECM as well as load stock flashes. I believe the Scanalizer is being phased out and that used to use the flash modules and load them the ECM.

Springer has been invaluable by providing the necessary information to better understand what a SERT does and how it works.
With that said there may be added value for the group by developing FAQ's for those who need answers to questions.
For example:
Ques: Can you save or upload and and save the stock map in your bike??
Ans: No. The SERT is a 1 way connection that "DOWNLOADS" or "WRITES" maps. It does not allow you to "READ", "VIEW" or "SAVE" the current map -- stock or custom UNLESS it is already on your computer OR the SERT CD that you have.
Quest: If I have a SERT and I am going on a trip what should I take with me?
Ans: The SERT security connector, SERT software, cables and your custom map which may have been written on a separate CD. There are MANY dealers that do not have the expertise to work on your bike and that cannot replace your cusotme map if it gets corrupted. So all of this stuff would be a "good trip insurance policy".
It may also be good to research who the most knowledgeable dealers are in this technology in the area you are going to as well as along the way.

Steve Cole:
Unfortunatley your posting # 40 is not correct. It seems that the factory messed up the 160 maps for the 06 models on the latest Cd-Roms that were distributed. Remember that there are both ECM changes in 06 as well as injector changes. so in the fatory's haste to get everything out, these maps were and still are messsed up and NOT RECOMMENDED FOR DOWNLOAD BY THE FACTORY. New version should be out soon since this is October when they were promised.
Regards.

Not sure where you are getting this info. The only problem that has been found with the 2006 SERT is it will not recognize a VIN from a FLHXi. All other bikes are fine...as well as all the calibrations.
I have talked to the factory about this...and they do not agree with what you have stated. I was told there will be an Oct release of the SERT...which will contain additional new cals and the fix for the FLHXi...and nothing else.
If you need the FLHXi fix now...you can get it from customer service now.

I didn't notice BUT I had a typo in my response. MY issues relate to a 2006 Ultra that was upgraded to a 1690 Screamin Eagle with ALL of the goodies. (Heads injectors --etc.
THESE MAPS WERE/ARE SCREWED UP on the latest version of the SERT AS THEY PERTAIN TO THE 06 BIKE DOWNLOADS.
The Dealer support people haven't fixed the maps yet BUT as I mentioned they are due out this month sometime.
I wasn't aware of the issue with the FLHXI until you mentioned it. It MAY BE just a small fix with the validation of the FLHXI serial number to make it an accepted value for the program.
BY THE WAY, I AM NOT in any means a SERT EXPERT. When I first posted this issue it was based on 1st hand experience that occured on a brand new undelivered 2006 Ultra that was customer bike. I asked for advice as to how to develop a map series of maps that would work with the new ECM.

Can you elaborate on the issue...what is SCREWED UP...again I talked to the factory and they are unaware of any issue around this. Again I was told, there is nothing wrong with the current downloads on the SERT.
I do know there is an issue with some of the cartridges when it comes to certain 2006 bikes...
Did you do a CVO 1690 upgrade?? Are you aware these have different injectors than the rest of the products?? The only issue surrounding this with the new SERT is the 2006 CVO Ultra cal was not included on the July/Aug release. I am told it will be on the Oct release.

WE ARE NOW ON THE SAME PAGE. Except the factory isn't being as forthcoming as they should be with you.
The was/is a unusual transaction BUt the customer bought a 2006 Ultra and then bought a 1690 103 inch complete motor and a 6 speed. the stock motor was removed and the new one was installed with the 6 speed IN AUGUST (please see my previous posts to Springer). BEFORE all of this was done of course the factory was contacted and they said that the NEW 06 SERT would handle the "remapping". Of course we should have realized that it still isn't good to be the first.
As you said on the 06 the injectors are different as is the ECM and some other items. So you couldn't download a 05 map for a 1690 and have it work "out of the box". The direction was do not load the 06 1690 103 inch maps on the SERT because they would not work and might damage the customers new motor. The suggestion was to build a map from the prior years and download that and dyno tune it to get it right since the corrected maps would not be ready until OCTOBER i/e NOW.
Regards.

You are right the 2005 cals will not work on the 2006...this is true for all the 2006 cals. The 2006 models have a totally new throttle body which makes the cals unique. There is nothing wrong with the cals on the SERT...in your case, the 2006 cal just wasn't on the CD.
This is no different than if you build a unique configuration. There is no cal that you can use "out of the box"....you must build a map for your config.
If you look at the listing of cals on the latest release...there is no 2006 CVO Ultra cal in there...just the 2005 cal.
Your message made it sound like the maps were screwed up...NOT SO...there was just not the correct map for what you were trying to do. All the Oct release will do is add this particular cal so you will have a cal you can use as-is.
FYI...the change to the ECM was minor...and the new one is retrofittable back to 2001...any calibration that works in an 2005 ECM will work in a 2006 ECM....and vice-versa. As you can tell by the cal listing which shows all the level 127 and 141 cals fitting in both 2005 and 2006 ECM's.
