How does SERT connect to bike?
I've been using a PCIII USB module which is velcroed(sp?) to the bike under the sidecover. A USB cable attaches to the module when you want to make changes to your map. How does a laptop connect to the bike when you have a SERT?

There is a cable with a communications box attached that plugs into the bike existing wiring harness. The connector that it plugs into can be found inthe manual. Some are under the seat, side covers etc...
If you want to know more I suggest downloading the manual PDF file I posted, it explains just about everything.

First, thanks to everyone for the positive comments !!
It is complicated without a doubt. I only posted information on what it is and what to expect if you purchase one. To use it to it's fullest extent it really takes someone that thoroughly understands every aspect of Fuel injection and air/fuel ratio's combinded with timing.
But it can also be used with good results using the canned MAP's supplied with the SERT and modifying them to suit your needs. The nice part about it is if you get too far out of wack and can't seem to get back to where you were, just load the last known good map you have.
The idea of the post is to take some of the "magic" out of it. It is just a program and I believe that if someone else can use it so can I.
Before I mess with anything that I know nothing about, I do a lot of research on the different aspects of it. For example, if I am adjusting the AFR in the SERT, I know what RPM is and I know what AFR is but what is MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure)?? And why is it measured in kPa?? What causes MAP?? What is kPa?? I go look it all up and read, read, read !!! Then after I think I have a comfortable understanding of it I go back to the SERT and look at it again. Now I have the information I need to start adjusting the AFR in the SERT.
Trooper, I don't know if it gets any easier but you sure do start to get a feel for what isn't right and from that I think you learn some "best practices" to use. I suppose you could do some damage to the bike if you got stuff really out of wack but the way I see it, a canned MAP and spark plugs and your good as new.

I was waiting for this post and it was worth the wait. Quite possibly one of the best technical breakdown of how something works and what the end user might see and experience. I loved the red arrows and circles with the corresponding #'s. What a great job explaining this.. Thank you very much for sharing. I am still somewhat in a toss up between the PCIII and the SERT, but i'm definately less intimidated of the SERT now and will re-look at it now with wiser eyes....
I am in the process of buying an 02 King classic and am a little concerned with the Dephi system in this year causing a conflict with the VIN..I sure dont wanna have to take it in to the dealer and go through all that trying to convince them of what I want... Ha

Don't worry too much about it, it is a known problem and with a little direction the dealer won't have a problem fixing it. The Moco has asked the dealers to do this service free of charge. And if you buy it from that dealer they shouldn't have a problem with it. I have actually dropped off just the ECM at a dealer and they plugged it in to someone elses bike and programed the VIN I gave them. But I don't think many will do that. There are posts on here that describe what to tell them at the dealer to get it fixed, I will see if I can find it.

Can I save my current MAP?
Springer...thanks much. Very nice job. I may buy a SERT to allow me correct the EFI after the stage I stuff I plan to put on my bike. I've read the SERT manual but didn't see what I think is an important topic covered. Do you know if the SERT will allow me to save my current (i.e. stock) MAP to a file that I can load again later? I would never expect to have to re-load the original MAP, but I'd like to have it just in case. Is this possible? Thanks

Unfortunately I do not believe you can transfer the stock MAP or any MAP that is currently loaded into your ECM back to the computer. That is one of the reasons that I recommend saving any and every change that you make as a new file on your PC so if you ever need an old MAP again you have it saved. The dealer can put a stock MAP back in if ever needed.
Again I have limited knowledge on a lot of the specifics so if anyone knows if this can be done, I would like to know for certain also.
Example, you create a MAP and upload it. You then save the MAP as "newpipes.mt5". You have some popping on deceleration. You go in and change a few settings and save the map again as "newpipesdecelpoptest1.mt5". You try it and the popping seems to be gone but you change a few things and try again "newpipesdecelpoptest2.mt5" but the bike now puffs black smoke on decel. you rename the MAP "newpipesdeceltoofat.mt5". Now you can refer back to that in the future to see what you did to cause that effect. You may also then rename the MAP that works as "newpipesnopop.mt5"

No, you can't retrieve a MAP which has been loaded into your ECM. You can continue to upload a file which you have previously uploaded and modified. In other words, if you uploaded (or your dealer did) a specific file listed in the SERT files section, you can keep this file and continue to modify it without contaminating the original.

And they need your interface from the race tuner you bought to do this. After that you should be able to use your version 4.1.2 software on your bike. This is a common problem when using the SERT with 01, 02 and 03 bikes. Depending on the dealer, you might be able to bring just the ECM and interface and they can power it up on another bike. Not all dealers will do this.
