SERT Connection Question

It's an E1505. Maybe that is the video input and I have no 9 pin serial inputs, just USB. If so, any thoughts?

I really have not seen 9 pin used on many machines after USB 2.0 came out. I have an older Sony that has a 9 pin and USB 1.1. The video is 15 pin and that would be output for an external monitor.

Is it a male or female connector. If it's a 15 pin female it's video out for a monitor. A serial will be a 9 pin male connector on the machine. If Dell is going the way of every other manufacturer on the new laptops they may have eliminated the serial port unless you use a docking station (obviously not practical for SERT operations). Haven't seen a E1505 yet, so can't say for sure.

I've had ok luck with the serial to USB adapters. Only real issue I've run into is the SERT software doesn't seem to like anything above com 4 and you can end up with the USB adapter coming up as com 9 million if you repeatedly unplug/plug it in. If you find the SERT software can't communicate, check Device Manager and see how many com ports are showing. Also check the serial to USB adapter and see what com port it's showing up as. If it's above 4, that's probably your problem. Remove the adapter (properly by using the Safely Remove Hardware option), Check to see what port your modem uses if it's active, and remove all the other com ports in Device Manager. Reboot. If you mistakenly remove a true a hardware com port, it will be detected and reinstalled after a reboot... in theory anyway.

springer- will become famous soon enough
The 15 pin connector IS video. There are some USB to Serial adapters that do not work with the SERT. I personally like the PCMCIA serial ports. It is a PC card that uses the PCMCIA slot and gives you a REAL serial port. They can be had on eBay for less then $20. As a side note, you can still get laptops with serial ports. They are typically higher end laptops. Also note that you can use a regular PC with a serial port to upload maps.

Thanks for the Help

Seems like the card for the PCMCIA slot is the answer. Is that a permanent notebook install or something that plugs into a USP port? Any chance anyone would know a part number/name from Radio Shack/CompUsa/Microcenter?? When I go to these sites and search for PCMCIA, there are a zillion hits and I'm not techsavvy enough to know which part I need. Thanks for all the help!

Search for PCMCIA serial port on Ebay. You'll see several of them for sale. It's just a little card that slides into the slot on your laptop. It has a serial port on one side.

I have a question that maybe someone here can answer for me. I have an 07 Ultra Classic and I'm planning to have a SERT installed and have it tuned on the dyno. This is being done at the dealer with a winter special. Now the question. When the dealer is done with the tuning can he make me a copy of the map, on a disk, that he installed on the bike? This way I can see what he did and have it in case I need it in the future. I was talking to the tech today and was told that the map cannot be saved to a disk but only to a file on the computer that is used by the dealer. I don't know why it can't be saved where ever the tech wants. It seem to me that he is just trying to get me to come back to him for future tuning.

You've got that nailed! The dealer not only can, but should give you a copy of the map. (The SERT software is just a Windows application that writes data files that can be copied to any computer medium.) Without it you can neither check your work, nor make any changes to the map. Presuming the dealer keeps your map, he would be the only one who could make changes in the future.

SERT Success-Update

Thanks to the assistance from people here and elsewhere, I was able to solve the USB/serial connection issue with my new SERT. The answer is a Belkin USB/serial connector pn F5U109. Got mine at Circuit City for $20. As someone had suggested, I did not use the CD install that came with the cables but downloaded the driver from Belkin. Worked like a charm. You just need to make sure the SERT tuner and the cable are synchronised on the same COM port which is real easy to do. I don't consider myself particularly mechanically or computer inclined but was able to make connections and load a stock map off the SERT in 10 minutes max. I only wish I knew this before I paid the dealer one hours labor to "install" the SERT. There's not really anything to it if you just follow the directions. Let me know if you have any questions and thanks to all for the help getting me started.

Gotta love that 'install' word as it relates to the SERT. Never could quite figure that one out.

Do I need the latest SERT for an 07?

Have read thru this post and it has a lot of info.
Been looking at the SERT on ebay, (I know a used one is worthless) but a few have new E version SERT's.
Will these work on 07 models, I am guessing these are older version software(maps on cd)and will not have 07 maps on them.
You can get a CD with 07 maps or still just tweak the stock map?

Thanks in advance.

You need the F version for an '07. I ordered mine from Zanotti's; $357 + shipping.
