Thumbs up Update on had to tear it down again.

My new KB pistons arrived today so we miked them and they were 3.873 1/2 thous, my bores are 3.875, both pistons and both bore were the same, now thats 1 1/2 thous clearence, I put in new pistons but reused my old rings, heck they haven't seated in good yet, anyways fired it up at 10:30 tonight and no knocking sound, motor is very quiet, it's so quiet I can hear the primary chain, I hope it stays that way, I'm happy.
It also goes to show that if the clearence ain't right on KB pistons your in for some noise.

Glad your happy... I for one would have never reinstalled those rings no matter how many miles were on them... Plenty of posts on that subject...

Rings

I have KB's, too. Running .001" clearance. That tolerence leaves plenty of room for breakin. New rings are a good idea.....just keep an eye on your plugs. I let mine warm up a little longer than most before heading out. Give those cylinder studs a chance to equalize before you hit her hard. I wait to temp. then just do what I want. I'd also keep synthetic out of there for a while. Let those rings seat for a few thousand miles. Just ride her like you're going to once warmed to temp.

Also, if you do hear some noise in the primary at some point, check the compensator nut. I don't know if the shop that did the crap work before I took her down was at fault, but it did come loose - only finger tight. Could be the extra torque in there now. Seems to be a common issue with a fresh rebuild-plenty of threads here for info.

Good to hear you're happy. That grin is worth 10 rebuilds.

Ride safe.

Tnford27 Our local motorcompany shop stopped doing real motrwork and became a hd parts changer after one of there Master Mechanics installed a set of KB's the wayyou would hd pistons about 3 1/2 years ago and it smoked like an old desil trunk in the morning. Owner was pissed ,dealer said owner broke in wrong ,owner told them fine, is you in court and then the motor was fixed. That was the last real hot rod work done there. AN they ran 2 drag race teams.

When I did my HQ build they sent me the wrong pistons. Discovered it during a compression test at 60 miles so I had to replace them with the right ones. HQ told me to reuse the rings. They reassured me several times that this was the right thing to do. I haven't had any problems.

Say it ain't so Joe (as in shoe less Joe Jackson)...

I stand on my original quote of I sure would not have reinstalled those rings...

You don't think HQ was saving money by you reusing the old rings do you?

As cheap as a set of rings are why would you want to leave them to chance????? Thats like reusing your oil filter when you change oil...

Just would hate to pull it apart again because there was a ring seating issue. Rings are cheap when one looks at how much money we spend on these things.
